We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sulfur a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sulfur, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
In a perfect world, we’d love to bring awareness to many different situations being good or bad, by using our platform. Whether it’s fundraisers for people in need or awareness for sex trafficking. We’d just love to use our platform to spread awareness to things we all as a band feel passionate about.
Sulfur, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We started Sulfur about a year ago, and have been writing and playing shows ever since. Most people say we resemble Alternative Metal, though we’ve always felt differently and strive to push ourselves out of this box we’ve unfortunately been put in. For us, we’ve always expressed ourselves best live, and we believe that’s the best way to experience us for sure. Although our products may not be physical yet, we are striving to create community and more true passion for live music, and music in general. We have also just released a three song ep that had been in production for quite some time. (Special thanks to Gruene Records and Drew Heaton for making that vision a reality!) As of now, our new material is our pride and joy of this band! We wouldn’t recommend anybody to miss out on this next era we’ve been in. Catch us at a live show and stay up to date on our insta, it’s where we post all of our stuff mostly.
How did you build your audience on social media?
We started our instagram when we had finished recording our first little demo tape, and uploaded it to YouTube for free streaming. This is what we used for our first post, and from there just posted clips of our music and photos from shows. We’re not social media experts but if we had any advice for somebody (preferably a musician), Focusing on your brand and your product first should be the obvious first step, but it would amaze you how fast people create social media pages advertising half baked products. The advertisement will only be effective as your product is enticing. Once this is covered, the biggest piece of advice we can give is to utilize your mystery on social media. From the point of view of a consumer, sometimes when content creators show me their product and the entire process it took to create the product, the mystery and space for my brain to personally latch onto the product is kind of depleted. It seems most people do this to have more content to post = more people seeing = more followers. But sometimes sacrificing a perfect first impression of your work for more content purposes and views isn’t the right way to promote your product. Focusing on your brand and knowing exactly how you’re going to present yourself in an enticing mysterious way (at first) is probably the best advice we can give. We aren’t experts on social media advertising but those are things we notice from a consumer standpoint. We really believe if your product is amazing, people will have no issue discovering you.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Our “reputation” within the scene we suppose comes from our live shows. We always give 110% and people seem to notice. Meeting all of the other great musicians and people is definitely a huge reason we are where we are today. We really depend on our community to give us opportunities, and we just focus on our music and having fun. We try to play live as much as we can, so we’ve just been around the block a lot haha.
