We recently connected with Sulay Lugo and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sulay, thanks for joining us today. One of our favorite things to hear about is stories around the nicest thing someone has done for someone else – what’s the nicest thing someone has ever done for you?
The kindest thing anyone has ever done for me is tell me the truth and push me to greatness. I had a English teacher in 7th grade tell me, “look if you don’t start reading more you will never go far, start reading books and think how you would picture the characters. I believe you meant to go far but you need to be able to read.” She was honest with me but also believed in me and pushed me when I didn’t want to be pushed because I didn’t believe in myself. Because she showed kindness & encouraged me, I now do the same for others.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
In 2017, I had bariatric surgery. I had struggle with my weight for a very long time. Once I had my surgery I would like to tell you my life was complete but now that’s when my health and fitness journey really begin because I had a tool that work for me but I still had to do my part. People think that once you have weight loss surgery, that you took the easy way out and that is far from the truth. This is why I started posting on Instagram. I am super transparent about my heath and fitness struggles.
I still have to work out and watch what I eat. I can still gain weight and I have.
I don’t shy away from being honest because my hope is always to inspire one person to do better.
I am not the perfect Instagram influencer you tend to see. I am a regular smegular woman. I love Jesus and I believe that health and holiness go hand and hand and I share my story with whoever wants to hear it. I hope to inspire women to take care of themselves. To find what works for them and stick to it by being discipline and consistent. Being discipline and consistent they are showing self love and self care to themselves which is so important these days.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Last year I got married, and was pregnant but unfortunately lost the baby 8 weeks later. 2021 was a beautiful but awful year. I gained 30lbs and was severely depressed but by the grace of God and my awesome husband and a good therapist. I got back into fitness and now I am back to being healthy and lovely my body right where I am at.
We are going to go through hard times but its all choice if we are going to stay down or stand up and fight.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Well I honestly don’t worry about the numbers of followers I have. I am real and transparent about my life and I know that’s what we as people want. My life isn’t perfect and I want to show others that they are not alone. I believe if you want to grow your following embrace who you are and show people the good and the bad.
