We recently connected with Sukia Akiba and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sukia, thanks for joining us today. Do you wish you had started you own firm sooner?
Looking back, I wish I had merged my real estate experience with my environmental passion sooner. Maybe then, I could have made a bigger impact during a more critical window. But here’s the thing – better late than never!
Honestly, starting Omere Development five years ago feels extremely late. The urgency of the climate crisis pushes me to wish I had started this mission sooner. We’re seeing more and more extreme weather events, fires, rising sea levels – all signs that our planet’s capacity to sustain us is at risk. While I’ve been passionate about the environment since childhood, I spent the first 10 years of my career in traditional real estate. It wasn’t until recently that I saw sustainability as both a necessity and a selling point. Omere Development isn’t just about building sustainable buildings, it’s about empowering people. We follow passive house standards, making homes energy-efficient and saving residents money. But it’s just as important to educate homeowners on these benefits. We teach them how to minimize their environmental impact and decarbonize their lifestyles.
The fight for a sustainable future is far from over. Even though I started later than ideal, Omere Development is making a difference. We’re educating communities, building responsibly, and empowering people to live a more sustainable life. And that’s a fight worth fighting, no matter when you join the battle.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Sukia Akiba, a sustainability leader who wears many hats. My journey began in Nigeria, where I witnessed firsthand the impact of climate change and unequal access to resources. This sparked a lifelong passion for environmental justice and social equity. My background is in real estate. For over 10 years, I worked in the industry, but eventually, a nagging feeling emerged. Traditional development often overlooked the environmental impact of construction and housing. So, five years ago, I took a leap and founded Omere Development. We’re a sustainable real estate development firm specializing in retrofitting existing buildings using passive house standards. Omere Development goes beyond just bricks and mortar. We believe a sustainable future requires an educated and empowered community. That’s why we offer a two-pronged approach:
* Building Greener: We transform homes and buildings into energy-efficient spaces, saving residents money on utility bills and reducing their environmental footprint.
* Educating for Change: We don’t just build green, we teach people to live green. We offer workshops and educational programs to empower homeowners and communities to decarbonize their lifestyles.
There are many sustainable development firms, but what sets Omere Development apart is our focus on education and community. We believe knowledge is power, and by empowering people, we create lasting change.
A Legacy of Impact:
I’m incredibly proud of the impact Omere Development is making. We’re not just building sustainable buildings, we’re building a culture of sustainability.
What I Want You to Know:
Here are the key takeaways I want you to remember about me and Omere Development:
* We’re passionate about creating a sustainable future for all.
* We offer eco-friendly development solutions that save money and benefit the environment.
* We empower communities through education and knowledge sharing.
* We believe in a holistic approach to sustainability – it’s about both the planet and the people.
Whether you’re a homeowner looking for ways to green your space, or a community leader seeking sustainable development solutions, Omere Development is here to help. Join us in building a brighter, more sustainable future, one project at a time!
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Leading a team and keeping morale high is all about fostering a sense of purpose and belonging. It starts with a clear vision – I make sure everyone understands the company’s goals and how their individual roles contribute to the bigger picture. Micromanagement is a morale killer, so I empower my team by delegating tasks and trusting them to own their projects. Open communication is key – I encourage questions, feedback, and celebrate both individual and team wins, big or small. Investing in my team’s growth is crucial. Workshops, conferences, or mentorship programs keep them engaged and learning. Finally, building a strong team goes beyond work. Team-building activities and celebrations create a sense of camaraderie that keeps morale high and everyone motivated to succeed together.
