We recently connected with Sugeidy Scott and have shared our conversation below.
Sugeidy , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today One deeply underappreciated facet of entrepreneurship is the kind of crazy stuff we have to deal with as business owners. Sometimes it’s crazy positive sometimes it’s crazy negative, but crazy experiences unite entrepreneurs regardless of industry. Can you share a crazy story with our readers?
Back in October of 2022, I got a call from someone in LA asking if I’d be interested in planning a celebrity birthday weekend. At the time I was at Home Depot shopping with my husband for something we needed to fix in the house and once I heard the date and I knew was going to be in NY that weekend I declined. I mentioned that I could recommend places, vendors, etc and I would be happy to help in any way that I could. A week later I get a text message from, the same person in LA saying they need a cake for Anne Hathaway! Again it doesn’t register in my head. I send my recommendation and that’s that.
Then a few min go by and I read the message again and I call my sister in New York who says “call him back!!! We don’t say no to Anne Hathaway”!!!! I worked with her representative in LA and send them several proposals for the decor at the chosen restaurant for her birthday dinner and I worked with preferred vendors for balloons. I personally designed her flower arrangements with were modern, simple, and full of color. Every detail was chosen by either Annie or her representative. I was excitedly overwhelmed since I had just planned a birthday dinner for 30 in NYC and needed to come back to Atlanta with very little sleep and make sure this weekend was special for my client.
Ultimately I fly back early that weekend and plan both her dinner and an intimate picnic at the home she was renting in the city. She was here filming her movie “The Idea of You”. Even after meeting her, I was just so shocked that out of all the event planners in this vibrant city I would be chosen to work on Anne Hathaway’s Birthday. I had a ton of help from vendors, friends, and family who chipped in to make it a successful weekend. Annie (I can call her Annie) Is the most gracious, sweetest human being and she was a pleasure to work with.
Sugeidy , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Sugeidy Scott I was born in the Dominican Republic and was raised in NYC. I have a bachelor’s degree in International Business Management and worked in Imports and Exports for over 15 years. I got into event planning because I love planning birthdays and gatherings. It started with my daughter Sky. I love coming up with a theme for her birthdays and really making it special. I was also the defacto dinner and event planner at my last corporate job. During the pandemic, picnics became very popular. As a gathering outdoors they really lend themselves to the social distancing we were instructed to follow. I really loved the idea of elevating the picnic experience and making it more luxe. I started looking at Picnic Companies on the west coast such as Santa Barbara Picnic Co. which had been doing elevated picnics for a long time. I designed and built our custom tables and I curated the decor to reflect the style and vibe of an intimate gathering for 2 or more. What sets us apart from others is our attention to detail we tailor our picnics to our client’s preferences in terms of colors flowers or themes.
I am most proud of the opportunities I’ve been afforded in my business. Working with brands such as Shake Shack in styling a custom picnic for a store opening to working with celebrities. More than that I never take for granted that each client hires me to be a part of a special moment in their lives. Whether it is a birthday, anniversary, or just because I never take the fact that they choose me lightly. We go above and beyond to make the service we provide top notch
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think what has helped me build my reputation in the market is not deviating from our brand values and aesthetic. Our clients care about the quality of the product and services we provide. Clients in terms of events care about photographs and how things look on their social media platforms. From providing real flowers in our picnics to curating the picnics so that no two gatherings are ever the same.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
A big source of new clients for us is google ads. Google makes it really seamless and targeted to create keywords and terms to make your business stand out and be found locally when searched online.
