We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Suede Lacy. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Suede below.
Suede, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I started in church. I had not only a spiritual influence but also a professional influence in music and the arts.
My pastor was my 2nd uncle and his brother (my grandfather) was the bass player for the church. The pastors son was the organ player (2nd cousin) and his other son is a Grammy Award winning musician (2nd cousin who plays bass guitar for Erykah Badu)
Most of my family members on the Lacy side are musicians and are very creative.
Most of them including my mother and I all are alumni of the Booker. T. Washington high school for the performing and visual arts magnet in Dallas Texas. Other notable alumni include, Erykah Badu, Norah Jones and Edie Brickell to name a few.
Without the foundation of church learning from my family and community artists I wouldn’t be Suede.
I studied some of my favorite artists like Ani Difranco and Norah Jones. I wanted to flow as smoothly as they did. I wanted to sing and play effortlessly.
Of course there was trial and error and many failed attempts at creating, “the project”, just for it to be removed from public access by me because of my own personal reasons, I wasn’t ready.
It took years for me to find my self in the world of art. And I’m still collecting layers to add to my soul everyday.
Listening to myself was probably the most important part. What I liked and didn’t like. What truly sounded good, what worked and didn’t work.
You naturally gravitate towards something that appeals to you. That’s your lane. Flow there until you’re ready for someone new if ever.
The doubt of others and measuring of your success against others can throw you off but only listen to your spirit. You know what’s true and important to you.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started producing on a PlayStation 2 game called music maker and music maker deluxe. The programs were my first introduction into the music industry. I would produce my own songs on there and that led me to using, “borrowed”, tape recorders from school and playing guitar.
I hadn’t gotten around to making microphone recordings yet.
That wasn’t until 2011 when I borrowed a friend’s iPad and started recording on GarageBand.
I made my first EP, “ By My Side”, in 2011-2012. It was more of a personal victory than a professional achievement.
In 2015-16 I produced and recorded, “Man in the Moon”, which was released as my first public debut album.
It was not a success and that put major doubts in my mind. However I was young and had a lot to learn and experience.
I’m currently working in the music industry now as a producer and songwriter. I also animated and created my first music video for Macy Gray (2023).
Life is changing slowly but quickly and what I have learned all these years in the world of music and arts is that when you are ready you’ll know. The art will speak for itself.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The Arts. The arts is my drive. My goal is to be great at what I do.
I feel my mission is to bring enlightenment and creativity to the people and that’s what I’ll do till the day I die.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I knew about all of the books and resources that existed out there in the world that taught about the arts.
Study and ask questions. That’s the only way you’ll learn and then apply your knowledge and skills!
