We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Suedabeh Ewing a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Suedabeh, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
In 2023, I curated my very first art show titled: “Woman, Life, Freedom” which was inspired by the women of Iran and their fight for freedom, justice, dignity and equality. It took a few months from the time the art call was sent out, the arrangements were made with the gallery hosting the show, and communications with the artists, to the point that the show was up and open to the public. Over thirty pieces of art hung on the walls of the gallery; all pieces on display were based on the artists’ response to the theme of the show. This project was very close to my heart because it was my way of showing my solidarity and care for the women of Iran.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Visual Arts has always been my passion. As a creator, the main way that I express my thoughts, ideas and beliefs is through painting. Influenced by my Persian background and growing up in a culture that emphasizes Arts such as calligraphy and poetry in a day to day life, I was naturally pulled into the field of Fine Arts. My work is deeply influenced by my upbringing and culture. I often refer to my identity when creating my art and borrow inspirations from the poems that I have read. Nature and people in my life are also my muse. I am constantly photographing my surrounding nature to document the living beauty that exists only for a short time; and use these photos as my source material in creating new paintings. I believe art should bring peace and comfort to one’s life and I strive to achieve that aesthetic aspect in my work by using colors, shapes, textures and movement in ways that are pleasing to the viewer’s eyes.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I consider myself a watercolorist and water media is what I am most comfortable with; but in recent years I have challenged myself using new mediums such as acrylics, oil and mixed media. I even received a recognition award at an artists’ exhibition for one of my oil paintings which boosted my confidence in pursuing new adventures. I believe creating my art in different techniques is similar to connecting with people through different languages and that allows me to have a broader audience. My goal is to advance my knowledge and talent in different ways in order to create a more diverse body of work.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Art is my passion. Art is a life force that inspires me and calls me to create. It is my way of connecting to the universe and experience peace. It is not just a hobby that I do to fill my spare time. With each piece of art that I bring to life, I advance my learning and feel fulfilled.
