We were lucky to catch up with Sue C. Dugan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sue C., thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the story of how you went from this being just an idea to making it into something real.
About eight years ago, I read an intriguing article in the DISCOVERY magazine about experiments scientists were doing on mice and chimpanzees. Basically, they were grafting a brown mouse head on a white mouse body. This information was intriguing to me and since I like writing speculative fiction (sci-fi, time travel, reincarnation), the idea stayed with me. So when I was doing some training to be a Pilates instructor, I began studying the anatomy book and the idea of head grafting continued to germinate. I continued researching this procedure and learned the Chinese had experimented on prisoners. So I wrote SUPPRESSED, a young adult book, about a 16-year-old girl who was paralyzed from the neck down and underwent this same surgery (her head on another woman’s body). Forward in time… I took a class on writing a screenplay and wrote SUPPRESSED as a script. Now I’m waiting to see if it will sell.

Sue C., before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Sue C Dugan, the author of 9 books with The Wild Rose Press and Amazon. As I stated before, I gravitate to speculative fiction (science fiction, reincarnation, time travel, and walk-in souls). Writing about these things has been exciting and fun. I’ve met wonderful people during this process and have learned many people believe in reincarnation. I’m a retired school educator/administrator and base some of my characters on the many students I worked with over the years. I often take two or three students and combine them to get my characters. I began writing in earnest when I retired. When my books started winning awards, it motivated me to write more!

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
There seems to be an inherent drive that pushes me to create plots and characters. I remember writing stories for my friends when I was in elementary school. I wrote for the school newspaper when I was in high school. I guess I’ve always had the desire to be creative through writing.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
When I think back to my earlier writing endeavors, I wish we had spellcheck and grammar help, etc. I used the dictionary and thesaurus. If I needed to research something, I went to the library. Now I can search and find what I need. Writing is still hard, but my output is greater than it once was.
