We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Stuart Urch . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Stuart below.
Hi Stuart , thanks for joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
I have been incredibly blessed to have great parents. At the age of 3 I had an interest in getting stronger, faster, and more muscular. I know that sounds weird, but I’ve always been fascinated with the body and how we can control those things I mentioned. My mother and father recognized that, and taught me how to do the basics. Push ups, sit ups, jumping jacks, lunges, just thinking it was a phase. However I wanted weights next, I’ll never forget my mother leaving my first set of dumbbells in the back seat of the car picking me up from preschool. I was hooked from that moment on. We would go to swim lessons and my parents would bring me down to the gym at the YMCA afterwards. I was told the machines would make me strong like Batman and Spiderman. Long story short you couldn’t get me out of the gym without crying. Especially when the employee came over one day and said I was too young to be in the gym, even with a parent. After that I recall my parents getting me more dumbbells, and then had my uncle who was a weight lifter as well show me things too. I am 29 now and have been working out for 26 years, not many people can’t say that and I’m so lucky to be able to take what I have learned during my lifetime and teach people how to exercise/ be healthier at my gym.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Stuart Urch’s journey into the fitness industry is a deeply personal one, rooted in his lifelong passion for health and wellness. His interest was sparked at just three years old, flipping through bodybuilding magazines and observing his mother’s dedication to fitness. As he grew older, Stuart became involved in sports, but a series of football injuries threatened to derail his athletic dreams. Doctors believed his back injuries were severe and irreversible, casting doubt on his ability to continue playing sports or lead an active lifestyle.
Determined to defy the odds, Stuart embarked on a journey of self-rehabilitation. Despite the skepticism of medical professionals, he refused to accept that surgery or medication were his only options. Through relentless dedication and a commitment to understanding his body, Stuart successfully rehabilitated his lower back within a year of graduating high school. This transformative experience ignited a passion within him to help others facing similar challenges.

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
I feel one of the most important things in my field is compassion and empathy. You also have to be a great a listener, if a client doesn’t feel like you are paying attention to them a bond can’t be created for them to trust your service. You also have to be charismatic and catch peoples attention, at least in the gym field. Most people want to have a fun experience, if you aren’t upbeat/ positive you won’t succeed in what I do.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your firm or practice?
In order to start my personal training business I didn’t need a lot of money to do so. A lot of people have gym equipment they are willing to part ways with for next to nothing if you just get it out of their house. I had around $350-$500 from being a maintenance worker/ custodian, so getting brand new things weren’t an option. Once I had the equipment, it was easy to accumulate money to expand to find a place to lease / get more equipment. I built great bonds with people over the years, and was able to find a full gym set from someone for $3500 about 6 months in. You just have to dig deep, the deals are present a tad tricky to find though.
