Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Stuart Lampert. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Stuart, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
My first jobs after college were in the hospitality industry, but my artistic flair allowed me to segue quickly and easily into the design and conceptualization of restaurants as trend-setting nightspots. In fact, I soon became involved with a diverse array of New York projects, including contributing to the design of the iconic Studio 54. Such experience encouraged me to pursue an active career in interior design. By the mid-Seventies, my frantic pace at work prompted me to take a much-needed vacation to Florida, where I met my late partner, Stephen Tomar. Our talents and ideas meshed so well that we banded together to establish Tomar Lampert Associates.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
The business started on the east coast with the primary office located in Philadelphia. We grew quickly and took on many commercial projects across the country including restauranteur, Victor Drais Beverly Hills’ hot spot, Drais, as well as residential assignments in New York, Hawaii, London, Aspen, Paris, Indonesia and all points in between. The opening of our Los Angeles outpost was pivotal to the growth of the business and eventually led to us to relocate our Philadelphia office to Los Angeles in the 80s. We drew notice from the Hollywood elite, and soon we were designing interiors for the big names in the entertainment business. We attracted a faithful following of celebrities and others who care deeply about their interior comforts. Our past clients have included Barbra Streisand, Johnny Carson, Miles Davis, Cicley Tyson, Mary Hart, Jackie Cooper, Van Halen, Ed Mc Mahon, Suzanne Pleshette, Tom Postom and Model Actress Vendela. We planned and designed the interiors of many commercial projects, including the headquarters for World International Network, Inc.; Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s offices in Culver City and New York; and numerous wholesale and retail clothing stores and showrooms on both coasts as well as Las Vegas and Atlantic City.
Today I run my business from the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Word if mouth and exposure in magazines. Our design and renovation of Johnny Carson’s Malibu beachfront home was profiled in Architectural Digest. We were named among the top ten designers in LA by Los Angeles Magazine in the late 80s. Other articles on Tomar Lampert & Associates have appeared in House Beautiful, , Design Times Magazine, Los Angeles Magazine, Los Angeles Times Magazine, The Hollywood Reporter, Designers West and Philadelphia Magazine. A raconteur with interesting stories and design ideas, my late partner Stephen appeared on television as a regular commentator on Interior Design “The Great Life,” a syndicated television show in the late eighties. In 2001, we designed the living room for a bachelor on the Home and Garden television show, “Designer’s Challenge.”
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think it’s a matter of looking for people you think are talented and be willing to ask for advice. Sometimes you have to know when to step back. Stand by your principals.
It’s the details that breathe life into interiors. Everything from a room’s window trimmings to its furnishings, fixtures and color palette are taken into thoughtful consideration as I create the “look” and “feel” of a home.
