Strayn, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?

(Urian Medina – Bassist) As a musician, my journey of learning has been multifaceted. I took formal lessons in my youth, a very common starting point for many aspiring musicians. My growth as an artist has been shaped significantly by figuring out discipline and routine. Much like maintaining a healthy lifestyle, dedicating oneself to music demands consistent effort.

Playing many genres has also been a crucial aspect of my development. I’ve honed my skills, learned to connect with audiences. Most importantly, I’ve embraced the wealth of resources available online: tutorials, instructional videos, and virtual communities to expand my knowledge and techniques.

Music has always been an integral part of the human experience. Our journey with music begins with a rich tapestry of diversity, blending the varied sounds of our cultures and musical knowledge into an exotic fusion that feels both unique and familiar.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

One of the most rewarding aspects of being an artist or creative is the ability to express yourself authentically and connect with others. Creativity offers a way for individuals to share their unique perspectives, emotions, and experiences with the world through music, visual arts, writing, or any other form of creative expression. Artists have the power to evoke emotions, provoke thought, and inspire change. The sense of connection that often forms between creatives can also be immensely gratifying. Collaborating with others, sharing ideas, and supporting one another’s artistic journeys can create unique friendships and experiences.
Ultimately, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is the opportunity to make a meaningful impact, both personally and within the broader community.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?

In my creative journey, I’ve found that there are always resources emerging that I wish I had known about earlier. However, some key resources have significantly enriched my experience. Online platforms such as YouTube and various social media apps have been invaluable. These platforms offer a vast array of tutorials, scales, patterns, and techniques suitable for everyone from beginners to experts. While it’s true that not everything can be found online due to copyright rules and other factors, the wealth of information available is staggering.

Also, I’ve discovered websites like “mymusictheory.com” that provide free resources such as quizzes, videos, and courses. These resources have not only helped me brush up on subjects but have also enabled me to learn entirely new ones. The accessibility and flexibility of online resources have played a crucial role in my creative growth, allowing me to continually expand my skills and knowledge at my own pace.
