We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Stone Wallace. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Stone below.
Alright, Stone thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
I find that patience and having that intimacy with what you’re doing is important. A lot of times nowadays people and brands are in a rush to meet the demands of others. I think meeting other’s demands and expectations often times ruin your creativity,, will power and motivation. When I start noticing that I am completing pieces to keep up, it ruined the quality of my art. You miss the little details that have a significant impact. I started to be intimate with my craft and in return I was rewarded with epiphanic, prolific creativity.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a visual artist on a mission. Detroit, MI is where I was born and raised, thus having a heavy impact on my macula and view of life. Being a part of a culture so enriching and full of divinity; I know it is my duty to visually portray every aspect of being melanated in not just Detroit but the nation. My work is healing; I make light of cycles, trauma, growth, beauty and everything in between. Baroque tones, lowbrow strokes and warm stoic colors captivate the vision of divinity and empowerment I see within my culture. Through mediums such as photography, painting, traditional drawing, and sculptures; I am able to captivate not just a vision but a feeling within my community. I invoke spirits to rise above all things meant for our demise.

How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
Staying true to my art, art style and message. I use my interpersonal skills to build and maintain rapport. I feel as though letting people understand how meaningful our relationship is let’s them know they aren’t viewers and clients but a cog in a functioning relationship between two humans. There is no me without them and I make that known through our interactions and exchange of thoughts.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Yes patience is a virtue but sitting around waiting isn’t helpful either. I use to always wait for the right time to do something which lead me to never completing the art piece. I remember there was a few clothing articles that I wanted to make that were cultivating and new but I was always waiting until I had a sewing machine, the right material, etc there was always an excuse. A couple of years go by and as I’m scrolling I seen some of the clothing I’ve thought of , exist but made by someone else. This showed me that if I have an idea, act on it regardless of the current circumstances and what you may feel. Even if you fail, it’s better than not doing anything at all.
