We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Steven Wong a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Steven, appreciate you joining us today. So, let’s start with a hypothetical – what would you change about the educational system?
I went to a pilot school, my class was a guinea pig for many initiatives and we were the 4th graduating class in high school. My graduating class was 45 students. In my opinion, my school lacked funding. For instance, we had to join another high school for specific sports teams, In certain classes, 3 students shared 1 textbook. We never had many varieties of elective classes and some of our teachers had to teach multiple subjects. Our school, made due for what we were given. Many schools should really teach financial literacy at an earlier age. Any financial, or real-life skills are key and prepare students to graduate into the real world with real-life knowledge.
Steven, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Steven Wong and I live a bicoastal life between the states of Massachusetts and California. I have numerous types of jobs under my toolbelt. I have too many interests and always try to make a difference in anything that I work on. I never like to feel pigeonholed in any areas of my life. I believe life is a sponge and I always enjoy absorbing everything it has to offer, whether it is good or bad. I truly enjoy the consistency of learning. In the last couple of years, I have grown my food vlog channel via Instagram and Tik Tok, trying to highlight mom-and-pop shops, or jumping in a 2+ hour line for the latest food trend/restaurant. I have been a Yelp Elite Member for the past 9 years and love every minute of highlighting my experiences.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I always say stick with your gut and what you are passionate about. Passion fuels you, and that makes you want to do better in your field. If you are passionate about a specific topic, that energy and positivity will be shown throughout your platforms of what you post, which tends to make people want to follow or see what you are doing. Building a social media presence takes consistency. You need to be a lot of things, such as relatable, knowledgeable, a good setup of what your media is and what the clear message is, maybe be in a specific market, personable, and of course yourself. Audience can smell a fake from a mile away. For me, it takes time and try not to compare yourself to others. Engaging with your audience is also important.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The ultimate goal for me, would be to completely do what I love full-time, while taking care of my loved ones. Isn’t that the objective in life, to be fulfilled, to love what you do, give back, and share the wealth with your loved ones? I always try to choose decisions that will bring fulfillment and joy, but also asking a few questions such as. how will this affect my family? How can I help someone else?
