We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Steven Ruscoe a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Steven, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
When it comes to taking a risk it’s not for everybody. Taking a risk is one of the hardest things we can do as humans. When I started my business I was taking a huge risk due to the fact that I started this business when covid just hit hard. I left a job where I was making $70,000 a year to start my business and had nothing in savings. This was one of the hardest things I could do because I have a family and all of the bills associated with being an adult.
Without taking a risk you can’t get the big rewards that everybody wants in life. I knew that I wanted to do something big in my life so it was time to take the jump. My best advice to anybody reading this that is wanting to take a risk, just do it. Make sure you have a game plan to execute the risk effectively before you take the jump.
Whatever you do just don’t be scared. You can’t be scared of failure because that is what will truly hold you back from greatness.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
My name is Steven Ruscoe and I own Northern Lights Auto Detailing in Guyton Ga. We are a protective coating and vehicle reconditioning specialist. I have been in this industry for a little over 14 years and I have completed over 16,000 vehicles personally. We are on top of our game in our local area and the company is spreading like wildfire.
I got into detailing vehicles as a quick job to hold me over until I can find something better but that never really happened so I just decided to stick with what I’m good at and hopefully I can make a little bit of money while doing it. I didn’t always want to detail cars but I’ve always had a passion for the automotive field so it was kind of a no-brainer for me to pursue this. I’ve spent years honing in my skill to be one of the best In my local scene and the reviews speak for themselves.
I built this company around one model and that is providing an excellent service to all of our customers. This dedication to providing excellent service has catapulted us into a quick growth which has been nothing short of amazing. It is a great feeling knowing that through this business I can make an impact on our local community.
Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
Marketing is huge for us over here. Without spending tons of money you can’t make tons of money and that saying holds true with every industry in the world. We have a pretty substantial advertising budget for social media and search engines like Google. We didn’t always have a huge advertising budget and I really didn’t spend a lot of money getting the word out at first but I realized I had to if I wanted the business to succeed.
There was this one time where we had gotten email from what I thought was a bogus scam company just trying to get my money but my wife did research on them and told me I should reach back out to them and see what they had to say since they seemed legit on social media. I reached out to Vexa Digital Marketing to get some more information about what they offer and what the price is for their services if I could see about growing my business. After a lengthy conversation we decided it was in our best interest to give them a chance and we sure are glad that we did. Since bringing them on board we have been able to scale our business faster than we could have imagined. We are seeing big returns (300%) with our monthly investment so that’s nothing short of amazing.
I was kind of hesitant to take on another monthly bill but I’m glad we did. It was literally a game changer. If you are wondering whether or not you want to take the jump here is your sign.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
My best advice for managing a team and maintaining high morale is to not be a trash person. If you want a good team and people that actually care about the success of your business you need to not only pay them an honest living wage, you also need to have empathy and respect for the people that are helping you succeed.
There are too many businesses out there that have trash morals and management is not their strong suit. Too many business owners and managers dehumanize people and drive people to depression. This is not the case for our company. We are a phenomenal business to work side by side with. All of our crew members make a great living and have a very flexible and easy schedule that allows them to be home a good bit throughout the month.
If you want a good team and a successful business you need to start at the bottom make sure your crew eats before you eat.
