We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Steven Prince Tate a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Steven Prince, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I learned how to become a Creative from college. I went to Middle Tennessee State University and took a course called Intro to Dance. There is where I was introduced to the idea of being a full time creative with the ability of living off your work. I also took a course called Choreography 101 and Acting 101. These course helped me understand how intertwined these beautiful art forms are as well as how to combine movement and character motivated themes into stories. The one thing that could have helped speed up the learning process is being taught how to get into these avenues to present your work. The skills that were most essential were and still is being patient with yourself, and allowing your artistic voice to evolve and manifest into different forms. The obstacles that stood in my way of learning more was being new. Not knowing how things work. Thinking everything was instant like a microwave.

Steven Prince, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into being a choreographer at a very young age. During that time, I didn’t know it had a name. The first thing that I created was for my Junior High Cheer team. They saw me dancing or knowing the “newest moves” and asked me to make up some “8 counts”. From there, the bug of creating and seeing your movement come to life and creating for others was something I craved. My cousins use to call me Darren’s Dance Grooves, a famous choreographer who produced for Britney Spears and is know for NSYNC’s Bye, Bye, Bye routine. The services I provide is creating beautiful moments for Performing Artist, on and off the stage, Dance Companies, Singers, Competitions, and Theaters. These moments include creative direction for music videos and theater performances, enhancing the movements of professional and amateur dancers, as well as actors and actresses. What sets me apart from others is my ability to connect with each artist through collaboration with a communal mindset. I am most proud when artist or clients shock themselves and applaud their efforts of living in their moment. I want people to know about my brand, my work, myself is that it is built on the focus of artistic discovery while shining a light on expression, collaboration, stepping out of comfort zones while embracing comfortablity.

How did you build your audience on social media?
When I first started I was anti-social media. I was so scared of how of the options of others and this whole idea of having everything perfect. I was scared of making any mistakes. The one thing that I learned is that if ” you build it, they will come.” I learned that your “audience” is your “audience”. Though you maybe presenting the same product of someone else, the idea, thought, the intention is what makes it different. So just do it! Put it out there. Make sure that you have the main things in order such as your purpose, where you are doing your business, the ability to explain your business and prices.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative, for me, are the smiles. I always question myself like, did they enjoy the process, did they get anything from it, did i waste their time and money. But, I am thankful to have worked with artists who have been honest and really embraced the idea of this being a “relationship”. They all allowed room for human mistakes to happen. They allowed themselves to be honest and vulnerable with me and I don’t take that for granted. These artist allow me to be part of their life works. Their “baby”. And they trust me to help develop and nurture its potential.
