Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Steven Pellissier. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Steven, thanks for joining us today. Day to day the world can seem like a tough place, but there’s also so much kindness in the world and we think talking about that kindness helps spread it and make the world a nicer, kinder place. Can you share a story of a time when someone did something really kind for you?
Probably the most thoughtful and caring thing one of clients did was pay for a fine/ticket for me. It was during our shutdowns during the pandemic here in Los Angeles. We were shut down. We were doing back door service. Meaning the salon was closed but clients would come in the back door. I had clients one day then there was a knock on the back door. It was an enforcement officer. He said he had been watching people come in. He issued me a ticket for 100.00. He said how many clients you have left. I said this is my last one. He said ok then went on. The client in the chair felt so bad he gave me 100.00 extra to pay for the ticket. I love my clients.
Steven, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I just grew up doing hair. Something that came naturally. But I never took it on as a job until I arrived in California in 2006. Went to beauty school here and got my license. Started work in 2009. Two years later after working in a salon I decided to give it a go on my own. I went to rent my own chair and create a business for myself. So in 2011 I gave myself 6 months to see if I can do this. I have not worked for anyone else since then. By 2013 I decided to open my own salon. Steven Mata Hair Salon. I was able to do this because of my experience in doing and understanding hair. I tell people that when that client sits in your chair that is your chance to wow them. They love it they will come back. Creating clientele. I also do make up. For me these go together. Hair and makeup. I have done photoshoots, weddings and special events in hair and makeup. This really lets me design something in the look we are going for. Create the entire image. I do hair, makeup, color, hightlights, men, women and extensions. I’m not limited as some that only do cuts. Or color. Or makeup only.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Make sure you have a website. People want to see your website. Now also have an instagram. People want to see examples of your work. Have yourself listed in anything that sells you as a person/place to go for the services they are looking for. Yelp. Groupon can also be helpful in marketing your service. There use to be so many more deal sites but only groupon is left. I one time had a company help me in search engine optimization. SEO. Appearing on Google is so important. Also Google Business Listing.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Yelp, Google Business listing, Being found on a Google search and groupon.
