We were lucky to catch up with Steven Morse recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Steven, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Our mission with Recruit U is to find and provide the perfect fit for each of our student-athletes in the college baseball experience.
For some athlete’s, the most important thing is getting the opportunity to play at the Division 1 level. For other’s it’s finding a school that is the perfect balance between a good academic fit and credible baseball program. Then there’s some athlete’s that want to experience playing baseball down south in warm weather, or some who will go anywhere that they believe they can play impactful innings as an underclassman.
Moreover, everyone’s “perfect fit” simply isn’t the same. There is no right or wrong in what a person wants out of the college baseball experience, but understanding and finding exactly what each individual is looking for is our goal with each of our clients.
I began this business in August of 2020, during the COVID era. I began to look into the NCAA transfer portal during this time and saw 2,000+ college baseball player’s listed unsure on where to go, and if they’ll ever get an opportunity to ever play again. Seeing and understanding the number of student-athletes that were misguided in their college recruitment process is what provided the motivation to begin Recruit U, and finding the right fit for each student-athlete is what we strive for.

Steven, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Just a little recap, I spent four years playing collegiately and then two months following my college career ending, I began working as an Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator with SUNY Brockport’s baseball program.
During this time, I was fortunate enough to work for an experienced Head Coach in Justin Beach who gave me the freedom to develop as a young college coach and recruiter to the best of my abilities. I learned a tremendous amount about coaching at the college level during my time at Brockport and was given the opportunity to go on the road and recruit as much as I felt in those two years. Through these experiences, I was able to network and develop some significant relationships in the college baseball industry that would become beneficial later in my professional career.
Following two years at Brockport, I got a call from the Athletic Director at SUNY Ulster, Matt Brennie. This was a Division Two – Junior College that I spent some time at the previous spring recruiting some of their players, and they were in search for a Head Coach.
Full disclosure, I was unsure how the interview would go. I was young at the time (23), but I was prepared and believed in my vision for the program moving forward. Once I sat down, Matt and I saw eye to eye on my recruitment plans and both saw some of the deficiencies the program had in the past and conversed on ideas to change them. SUNY Ulster is a program that didn’t have housing, meal plans, an on-campus field and was coming off a last place finish in the conference tournament the year prior.
I saw this as the greatest opportunity in the world at the time, because I felt that if I could turn this program into something special, it could show people in my industry nationwide that I understand how to build a successful college baseball program.
In my third year at SUNY Ulster, we had a really special year and group of players and were able to capture the Region XV Title for the first time in 15 years. It was after this season, where I was then given the opportunity to begin scouting for the San Diego Padres of Major League Baseball.
Following my fifth year at SUNY Ulster, I decided to step down and move to Tampa, FL, where I now utilize all these wonderful relationships I was able to build during that time to help student-athletes with Recruit U achieve their dreams of playing at the next level.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe the biggest impact on our reputation with Recruit U is the success stories that comes from our prior clients.
For starters, anyone that advises or guides you through Recruit U is either a former college coach or has worked in professional baseball. This is important because being in those positions, the relationships with other college coaches are legitimate and our belief is that we can evaluate you properly on where you fit best.
Our success is 100% at Recruit U in finding and receiving athletic offers for our clientele. Our prior clients and their families provide feedback following the experience of working together, and each of our new clients in the sign-up process are given direct contact information for any of our previous clientele to contact and ask about the experience on working together.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I’ve noticed the most effective strategy for growing clientele is doing it the right way with current clientele. Majority of our clientele have friends/teammates/family members with similar dreams and developing a reputation for providing a quality experience when working together has led to more clientele interested.
