We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Steven Mays a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Steven, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
They instilled wisdom in me/introduce me to God. Allowed me to find my path as my own man. They are consistent in my life. Spoiled with true love and wisdom instead of material things. Showed me to actual value people and understand them. Instilled me with secureness /confidence/integrity. Punished me when I deserved it but allowed me to redeem with true forgiveness and correct my wrongs. . Each one of my parents/grandparents taught me lesson. The lessons I learned in life from them, allows me to go anywhere in life and make it. I can be at peace also ready to protect. I can share one of the things my grandfather always shared with me, don’t fall in love with money. Love the work you do. My pops: alway remind me to keep God first, pay attention to your surroundings, watch your back and everybody ain’t your friend. My mother: don’t fall in love with beauty but with character first. She allowed me to be a man, make my own decisions and step up when I wanted/needed to. My stepmother: she was always spot on with the words of love. She always there when I needed her most(usually when I was in trouble, still to this day in my adult life) she’s the sweetest. My paternal grandmother: don’t take any wooden nickels. My maternal grandmother: wept while I’m here don’t weep while I’m gone. I love them so much. I cannot be where I sit in life today if it wasn’t for them. All my parents/siblings.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into comedy thru a lot of encouragement through folks I met in this life. Seeing others laugh, make me happy. When I look back and the only thing I could ever provide for some folks was a good laugh, it was like I was doing a service for you. You can forget about your problems, as long as Steve is here everything is good. Never thought about doing standup until college, that’s when the work of crafting a story to be related to by strangers started. As far as being proud of myself, I’m happy that I don’t have a quitter mindset.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn how to be unfunny. Once you find something you’re passionate about not everyone will understand how you visualize things. Where the ideas come from. You have to stay true to your beliefs and adapt/adjust accordingly. Some folks I stop being funny to which was like damn okay, but it’s others probably more who needs you to share that humor/word/message etc. . The most humbling thing is trying to be funny and not being funny in a room full of people. So you learn to be unfunny. I have to trust what feedback to take home and what go ignore. Listen to everyone cause you can learn from anyone.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Quality of quantity.
