We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Steven King a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Steven, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Recently just dropped an album on all platforms named Stevens Universe. Long overdue project that needed to come out with my brother Mane Mikey. He produced this whole album from start to finish so shoutout my bro for real. I have A LOT of songs in the vault, I guess you can call me a song hoarder sometimes. My main goal is release them and not be so possessive with the art cause creatives are for sure meant to be shared for the world to hear or see. Overall though i definitely have more music coming out gonna start pushing for a single every other week cause theres too many. I’m very excited to see what the next run looks like for me.Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
How i got into/craft/creative
I never thought id be making music for sure. Growing up i was more involved in sports then anything but i always was interested with music. Having older brothers listening to the artist like Lil Flip, Chamillionare, Z-ro, Dj Screw all the Texas wave basically with a mix of Pac, and Big, going to school hearing the latest. One day when i was in middle school my mama told me “You remember lyrics from songs and lines from movies but cant remember your notes for a test.” and i think thats what really started my writing process. I would take my notes from school and make them into songs over instrumentals i liked on youtube that i could remember for class and test. Im pretty sure the first song i made was to Lil Waynes “Right Above It” and since then Ive always been a writer. I started writing more in high school but really didn’t think about recording. My friends would go to the studio and make a few songs but just to mess around nothing serious. Then the engineer told me he made beats and he sent me a couple. Next thing i know i’m at the studio recording songs. S/o Lane! Rest is still unwritten…
Elevated to starting my own branding under “LATENITE” it originally was going to be me and my homie under the duo artist name but eventually ended being the foundation of what kind of vibes i bring to the speakers. The music you can listen to when you’re driving on the freeway 2AM, you got paper, purpose and plenty more to get and a lot more too see. Music you can relate to, whether if its the melodies the cadence lyrics or even the beat. “LATENITE” is also has its merch line on the way.
What sets apart/most proud/future fans
Next move better than my last move.
Just doing what you want is important, the best part about all this process is understanding that when people f*ck with the music they f*ckin with me. The real me. I know what im capable of and what I stand on. Im proud of the progress i’ve made so far but not satisfied. You could say im my own biggest critic so really i can chase but just strivin to be a better artist. Performing for 10 or 100 i will always have love for my fans. Too my future fans cant wait to see them. To my supporters from the jump its only gonna get better.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Be open. Have open arms to new things, new sounds and new ideas. The world is full of innovatives. So really getting your attention and time towards something new is always a great feeling. Love is Energy all the way around. A reminder to myself i wear it on a cap most of the time from “The Small Shop in LA”. But overall if it ain’t for you then its just not your cup of tea. Instead of throwing shade just don’t say nothing and move on
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Knowing that your being heard or seen. I’ve had random people in my DM’s hit me up and send me a screenshot of a song there listening too of mine and tell me man you don’t know but this my sh*t right now and tell me what they been goin through and thinking to myself like..wow, you listened to me and in a way i helped this person fight through a difficult time when they felt some type of way. I think when looking back on what’s rewarding to me that really is the best feeling.
