Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Steven Covarrubias . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Steven , thanks for joining us today. Have you ever had an amazing boss? What did you learn from them? Maybe you can share a story that illustrates the kind of boss they were or maybe you can share your thoughts on what you think made them an awesome person to work for?
2011 I studied master make up at Cinema, make up school, in Los Angeles. Although they do teach you the basics and essentials to become a make up artist. There was still so much to learn. 2013 I started interning for a company called Bone Yard Effects. Larry Bones one of the co-owner took me under his wing and became my mentor. I learned a lot from Larry. He gave me the resources, materials to practice with and experience. I strongly believe that I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for Larry bones. When I was working for Larry, we were the company doing all the mask and make ups for Universal Studios Hollywood- Halloween horror nights. (HHN) my job description was a shop technician. Which meant I floated around the studio. anywhere from sculpting molding, advanced, moldings, painting, casting and fabricating. 2016 was the last year Bone Yard Effects resigned their position at Universal which led to a new chapter in my career
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
The core route of Platinum Realm Production is SFX Makeup. However, over the years we’ve kind of became a one stop shop for any production needs. From building props to building film sets. Prosthetic appliances is our specialty for bringing any creature or character to life.
We also create high-end Halloween mask for collectors, or just a simple mask that stands out from your typical Halloween stores. Our main distributor is Halloween express located in Rancho Cucamonga Victoria gardens. We also do custom builds for online orders or trade shows.
Over the past five years, we’ve also been getting involved with videography and cinematography. The idea is to be able to create any horror film with just a grab and go crew with any creative ideas.
I’m really proud of where Platinum Realm Production stands today as a company. for weave works with so many creative people and big-name corporations.
I don’t think nothing about us in particular sets us apart from any other company. At the end of the day, we are all artists trying to bring cool things into this world. And as much competition as this industry has. There’s still plenty of opportunity for everyone.
I will say our foremost priority is to bring whatever vision, our clients, or customer has to life, no matter how abstract. We love a good challenge. And willing to go the extra mile to bring your vision to life.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
It’s such a tricky industry to find clients and typically works by word of mouth, recommending, etc. Trade shows is a great way to be able to chat and meet clients in person. We used to have a website but it became difficult to navigate for us so we resulted to just using Instagram under two different pages for specific needs. reapereffects for special effects needs and platinu_realm for video needs.
Okay – so how did you figure out the manufacturing part? Did you have prior experience?
Everything we create is created from scratch, in house. Using techniques develops over the years, from being a special effects artist in the industry. With technology involving, we still tend to lean towards old-school methods and utilizing new technology where it’s needed. For example 3-D printing versus resin casting.
Occasionally, we subcontract work out to other companies to meet deadlines, but for the most part we do 100% of the work in house. For every projects is different. We also hire and bring different artist in to work on the specific project.
