We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Steven Blackett. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Steven below.
Alright, Steven thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I will say I always had a natural talent and feel for music and business. I’m quite the social butterfly as well so with that mixture along with observation I honed my skills to where they are today. I still have a long way to go, and I am excited for the journey and what awaits me. I don’t think I could have done anything to speed up the process. Everything is in God’s timing. He laughs at our plans, so I am happy with my journey. I believe in staying true to myself, remaining humble and a high work ethic were very essential in my journey.
Being a newcomer in the industry persons weren’t necessarily forthcoming or welcoming with information etc. I had to learn the hard way, but I did, and I cherish those experiences and obstacles.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am from the island of Barbados. I have many hats but to name a few I am a deejay, event host, global brand ambassador for alcoholic beverages, fitness supplements and more. I’m also a reality tv star and finally I am a qualified Human Resources practitioner. I am mostly proud of my journey with Sovereign Brands in which I represent Luc Belaire, Bumbu Rum, Villon Cognac and Mcqueen and the Violet Flog gin. I have been with Luc Belaire for roughly 7-8 years but last year I signed on with Sovereign to represent the entire portfolio along the likes of Rick Ross, Gucci Mane, Wiz Khalifa and more.
Another proud moment was getting my feet wet in the tv world and made a breakthrough to international television. It’s a great feat for someone from a small island where opportunities are far and few. I hope to continue that in the near future.
I somehow lost some inspiration recently but family, friends and getting closer with God brought back that passion I needed.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Some persons don’t value the contribution of creatives, artists etc. but will contract these persons to provide services. All I ask is that when you acquire the services of the creative world. Pay them what they charge. It’s not a hobby, It’s a job, career etc.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I am a big fan of 50 cent and his journey. I recently listened to his audio book Hustle Harder and Hustle Smarter. What I took away from it is that you can’t remain the same with success.
