We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Steven Bankey & The Flatland Band a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Steven Bankey & The Flatland Band, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
We are set to release a new single called Remind Me in the fall of 2022. This single means so much to us because it comes from a very personal place. We all had a very important role in creating this record and we are very proud of how it turned out. In todays fast paced life its very easy to get lost in the rat race and feel like you have stalled out. This song reminds us that even though it can feel like we aren’t moving forward. If we look back we can actually see how far we have come. It inspires us to keep pushing forward and chasing our dreams and goals. We hope that anyone who hears this record feels the same way and it can help and inspire those it reaches.
Steven Bankey & The Flatland Band, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Steven Bankey & The Flatland Band is a country/red dirt band out of Kansas City. We are a high energy band and pride ourselves on giving our audience an exciting and memorable experience. We formed in 2018 but the members of the band have many years of experience under their belts. This experience has really helped shape our sound as each individual brings a unique influence to the band. We started like many bands in our local scene and still play frequently in the KC area. The past two years though we have branched out and started playing regionally. It has been an awesome experience traveling across the midwest in a 1996 E150 conversion van we call The Blue Buffalo. We believe our on stage chemistry and song writing sets us apart from others. We really enjoy doing what we are fortunate to do and feel that really translates to the audience and they enjoy being a part of it with us.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Definitely one of the most rewarding things for us is making a difference in peoples lives through our music. We get emails and messages from people all over the country who have found our music through online sources telling us how our music has helped them in one way or another. There is no greater compliment we could get than that.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
We have many conversations about goals. It is probably one of our most frequently talked about topics. I think like anyone else in our field the goal is to be able to make a comfortable living and providing for our families making music. There isn’t any particular playbook to this but we all feel like we can do somethings to help us achieve this goal. One little thing that we do that makes a difference is we always leave the stage cleaner than when we arrive. This may not seem like much but it is. So many venue owners have complimented us on this and it shows the amount of our professionalism. This industry is very networking driven. So if that’s something that we can do to make a good impression and get us future gigs by word of mouth or referrals its worth it.
