We were lucky to catch up with Steve Yancar recently and have shared our conversation below.
Steve, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
Being a business owner is great! Of course it comes with its fair share of challenges, but I think that’s all part of it. It’s the constant hustle, getting no days off, all the work that gets done behind the scenes without getting credit or a pat on the back…that kind of stuff isn’t for everyone, or else everyone would own their own business.
The buck stops with you. There is nobody else to pass responsibility onto – or blame for that matter. Sometimes it’s nice to be able to say to a client – “I’m sorry that “Blank” dropped the ball on this one, but it won’t happen again”. But when you’re in charge, there’s none of that. You have to take responsibility, learn from situations, adapt and grow.
My main thing I tell myself and my employees is that mistakes happen, and that’s ok – I just don’t make the same mistake twice.
Steve, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
PRÆCH Productions was officially on the books in 2019 but existed 4 years prior in sin. PRÆCH focusses on production in the form of video, photo, design and management of content. We work with all types of brands in different markets, but our bread and butter is in the outdoor industry. Personally, I grew up surfing and skating so that background definitely lends itself to my style while filming. The aesthetic of our work is dark, raw, and a little rough around the edges… just how we like it. Here at PRÆCH we are driven by authenticity. Content creation is a saturated market and we do it our way, which hopefully makes us stand out in the crowd.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
My partner and I initially met through social media in a kind of a back and forth admiration of each others work. Then we officially met at a really crusty dive bar, had a few too many drinks and the rest is history.
Any advice for managing a team?
Hiring and working with the right team is imperative in order to achieve success. For us – work ethic, personal responsibility, and creativity are the key factors that are in each member of our team. As far as managing this type of team – its more about guidance than management. I don’t want to baby sit and I don’t want to kill creativity. In my experience guiding the team in the right direction and then taking a step back allows everyone creative freedom and usually results in a better end production for the client.
