We recently connected with Steve Torres and have shared our conversation below.
Steve , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I was an independent contractor with a courier company. Earning a great income of 5 figures a month.
I was basically working 24/7 would sleep in my car and shower at gym.
I would commute from San Diego to Los Angeles everyday.
I never had time for my family or even photography.
This one day the company I was working under, had wanted to stop my pay for commuting from San Diego to Los Angeles but still wanted me to commute everyday, that’s where I said I’m gonna take the risk and pursue in my photography.
Took a huge pay cut but everyday I’m getting my self out there. If I can work 24/7 somewhere else I can at least put in work 8 hours a day in what I love to do.
I’m getting booked, my work is in multiple magazines which is amazing and a goal I always wanted.
And now to be interviewed by magazines is just absolutely amazing.
My income isn’t how it use to be YET, but for sure I am happier and not as stress and I get to he home with my family. Definitely gotta take the leap of faith in trust in God. It will all work out.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a 29 year old husband and father, I got 3 amazing boys and a girl on the way FINALLY haha. She’ll be born in February.
I am a full time photographer and getting into videography.
As a kid I always loved making and editing videos with my phone and people loved them.
2018 I finally purchased my first camera which was a Canon M50, I had purchased it only to do video until one day my friend Eddie invited me out for a photowalk, which is a group of creators going out and just having fun taking photos or video,
My friend Daniel was teaching me how to shoot Manuel and just took off from there.
Getting compliments from my photos from other photographers that been doing it for years just truly made my day and made me fall in love with my photography even more.
I now provide photography and videography to my clients.
What I been told by other clients that sets me apart is, I’m fun, reliable, trustworthy, fast turnaround and I make everyone feel comfortable when taking their photos.
For me fast turnaround is important because if someone took my photos I get excited and can’t wait to see them. So I do the same with my clients.
I love going above and beyond for clients by taking photos they never thought would be taken, fast turnaround and being understanding.
I am most proud of so much I’ve accomplished at a short time, which is my work being featured in multiple magazines, being interviewed as photographer because it shows I’m actually getting recognized by my work.
But most importantly I’m proud of all is being able to donate my time and talent to fundraisers, cancer events, and families with kids with special needs.
I also love helping out people that just wanna learn photography.
I have a son with special needs so I know how challenging it can be to get a good photo and finding someone with the patience of taking photos,
Also lost my grandma to cancer at a young age and wish I had more photos with her,
This is why I offer photos to families with cancer or special needs.
For my future clients, just know that I put my heart in every photo and video I take. Photography and videography is much more than just a pay check, its what makes me happy and feeling free.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is to be able to travel as a photographer or videographer,
Would be awesome to get hired and see new places while getting paid to do it.
My wife is my business partner so for both of us to travel and work together is just a dream come true.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
What helped me build my reputation is just being an honest person.
Do your photoshoots because you love it, not because you’re getting paid for it.
I think some creators struggle with that because they only start doing it for the money and forget why they started
So for me to show the love of my craft is showing to my clients and is why they love to work with me.
