We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Steve Talks Books. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Steve below.
Steve, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
When I first started creating content for YouTube, I wasn’t really sure what I was doing. (In fact, I’m still not all that sure!) After building the courage to ask an author for an interview and having a great conversation with him, I realized that was what I wanted to focus on.
There is a skill set to conduct meaningful interviews, it’s something I’ve been trying to improve each time. Hearing stories and different experiences from so many different people who often spend years writing a book with little financial gain is something that has been a motivator for me in my own life. Hearing their successes and failures has been a learning experience, I hope people who listen or watch my content learn something new, too.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
In an effort to spend less time with technology, I decided I wanted to start reading more books. To keep myself accountable and connect with others, I started creating content on YouTube sharing my thoughts and experiences. I was fortunate to have connected with so many great people who share the love of not only reading but supporting others and lifting each other up.
I started interviewing writers and other content creators, sharing their stories with whomever wanted to listen. I also started having group discussions with others who read the same books I have that wanted to discuss their thoughts about the book. We discuss characters, story elements, themes and much more. It’s given me so many different perspectives that I would have never considered. I’ve learned that sometimes you just be quiet and listen, you will learn something when you do.
How did you build your audience on social media?
For many years I avoided social media. But as a content creator you can’t avoid most of it. It’s a great way to share your content with people who are looking for it.
I have always taken the approach of interacting with other people, supporting them and creating a symbiotic relationship with people who do the same. We all lift each other up and support each other, we aren’t in a competition.
Also it’s good to connect on a personal level with your audience, potential audience or other creators. If all you do is share your own content, people will grow tired of it and you won’t build meaningful relationships. Share a little bit about yourself, talk about other topics and let people get to know you. It creates bonds and long lasting friendships.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I like to think what’s helped build my reputation is being supportive and kind. Remember the big picture and what really matters, spend the time to share other creatives work, talk to them, build relationships.
As a content creator, the energy we put out into the world with the type of content we create will be the energy we receive in return. If you create negative content, you’ll attract negative people. Negativity attracts lots of eyes and ears, but the people looking for that will return that energy back to you. That works for some people, and that’s their choice. Everyone has to decide what kind of work they want to put out into the world and what they want in return.
I do my best to remain positive and supportive, and I think that has attracted the people who think the same way and made the connections and friendships I’ve made much more meaningful and long lasting.
