We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Steve Ramos . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Steve below.
Steve , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
There’s a critical idea that drives my business and creative decisions. I call the concept a “Creative Shift,” meaning to step to the left of what you usually do and aspire to do something different.
My work as a journalist reporting on culture, design, and technology introduced me to numerous innovators and thought leaders. I crafted the idea of a “Creative Shift” after reporting on filmmaker Joss Whedon experiencing burnout while directing The Avengers. I remember Whedon telling me that he thought he needed a vacation. Instead, he filmed the black-and-white Shakespeare movie Much Ado About Nothing at his home with acting friends. My story for Fast Company, titled Why You Need a Creative Shift Instead of a Vacation remains very popular. It inspires me after taking my content creation skills from the media sector to marketing.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My experience sharing stories about frontier technologies with global audiences is unique. My work as a content marketer and product manager sources hundreds of business, culture, and technology stories for major media brands, including New York Magazine and QUARTZ. I also identify the values driving industry leaders and the products and services they bring to market.
Purpose-driven products and services continue to be critical for how I create, live, and work. Look at interactive experiences from team members, and I like the PoD Discovery(s) podcast festival or the Good Discovery(s) civic design festival. Look at our ghostwriting services. Listen to our interview podcast Frontier Storytelling. You’ll see a commitment to impacting communities for good.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
What colleagues and peers call a pivot, I describe as the “Creative Shift.” The “Creative Shift” drives a commitment to diversity and equity. It’s essential to how I work, like embracing emerging technologies to better connect with customers. The “Creative Shift” ignited a commitment to continuous learning. It’s OK if you describe this as a pivot. What’s important are the values we share.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) remain a famous business phrase today, but DEI remains essential to my work. I remember being passed over for contractor considerations when I was the lone Latino at a startup support system. My DEI commitment precedes current business trends and remains as essential as ever.
