Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Steve Mercer. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Steve thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
We started our company in 2020 due to businesses closing leaving people that had a need to have repairs made to their homes in a bad situation. While most were remotely working or some were not able to work at all, people had alot of time to notice the things in thier homes that needed repair. If you have a broken window or wood damage from rot, these things need to be addressed quickly. We took major precautions to maintain the health of our selves and our customers but still needed to get the jobs done. We wanted to provide the best service at the best cost during these times especially, to show that there are still company’s that take pride in doing a job right and with craftsmanship without breaking the bank. We chose our company name Craftsman Glass and Door for that very reason, craftsmanship. We strive to do the right thing on every job and keep the customer’s wants and needs in mind. We want to go above and beyond the expectations and leave our customers happy; giddy over their projects. We noticed with the housing market exploding the need to make repairs to homes drastically increased. We wanted to provide a service to our customers that would help them complete their projects and accomplish their goals whether they were selling their home or just wanted to spruce things up.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Steve started in the glass industry at 17 years of age being introduced to it by a family friend while still in high school. Steve started in a glass warehouse learning to cut glass and making insulated glass units. He moved into installing glass in the commercial / residental areas having great mentors along the way. He has developed the skills of repairing wood damage, installing residential doors, servicing windows, doors and patio doors. We also install frameless showers and mirrors. We love working with our customers and taking care of all their needs and wants. We soon realized the need for door and window repair due to wood rot/ damage and not many glass company’s were on board with taking care of both needs. Most wanted to have a carpenter make the repairs to the wood and then come replace the failed/ damaged glass. We decided to meet both needs and have expanded our skills to cover most wood damage needs around doors and windows. We love helping our customers accomplish their goals with their homes and creating relationships with them. Most of our customer’s are reffered by word of mouth from past customers and this is our best accomplishment, satisfied customers.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
We here at Craftsman Glass and Door, Inc believe in going above and beyond the expectations of our customers. We want to get the job done right the first time with efficiency and minimal disruption to our customers. We want to convey our heart felt gratitude to our customers while we are in their homes because without them, we would not be here today. Our belief is ” do the right thing because it is the right thing to do” although cliche it is very true.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
When we first started our business we both still worked full time jobs. We worked on our business after hours and on the weekends. We worked out of our personal truck with a home made wooden glass rack, we also had a 12 x 24 shed in the backyard where I would cut and store the glass and materials that we would pick up from our suppliers. This allowed us to build up capital and after about six or seven months we had built up enough to purchase our first van. We were fortunate and had many repeat customers and gained new customers, I was soon able to leave my full time job and pursue my dream full time. We found our first shop within 1 year of starting our business and were able to relocate to a much bigger space. My wife was able to leave her job and join me full time withinn 2 years of starting our company. It was tough at first but when you are doing something that you love and you are trying to build a life for you and your family it is all worth it. Patience is the key to building a successful business.
