Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Steve Ficca. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Steve, appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Our job is to help people. Because we do it under the guise of a sport, I think people lose the message sometimes. We practice dedication, determination, discipline. Everyone is on a mission to win, sure. But it’s not really about the win on the mat so much as it is about setting a goal, and putting in the necessary amount of work required to achieve that goal.
Everyone grows and progresses on their own timeline, but as we set these goals for ourselves, we bring out the best in not only us but the people around us. A rising tide lifts all ships!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We opened the doors of Odin’s Halls Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Fitness in October of 2018. After years of being a bouncer on the Las Vegas strip, and the countless fights that go along with that life, I decided it was time to do something different, something where I could use my life experiences to help other people.
In a city that’s commonly referred to as “the fight capital of the world,” high quality Jiu Jitsu and MMA gyms are a dime a dozen. Professional fighters the world over flock to Vegas to experience the one of a kind fight scene that exists out here. But unfortunately, in a scene this competitive, a lot of the regular people get left behind.
Opening a gym that focuses on every day people; we have the opportunity to help people use martial arts to better their every day lives. Sure, we have some guys who are really into competition, but at the end of the day it’s about so much more. Providing a space where families can train together, where kids and their parents can learn side by side and develop confidence while learning the potentially life saving skill is a super satisfying way to live.
It’s like I always tell my students: competition is what we do for fun, but our true mission here is to help people become the best version of themselves.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think it’s all about being present. When we started, my goal was to be as in your face as possible. We started out by doing promotional events at local schools, local parks, bars/restaurants, etc.
Visibility is the biggest thing, whether it’s having a big google presence or an active social media, it’s important to get yourself out there. But from there, it’s all about results. As you succeed in your craft, word of mouth spreads.
We try to participate in every local tournament, as well as travel as much as possible, all in our effort to make Odin’s Halls a household name in our sport.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think the biggest success has been in our sincerity. Remaining true to ourselves and our mission’s objective has helped us to stay on course and put out a genuine, but legitimate product.
Our business has its own ins and outs and it functions very differently from most businesses. There’s not many establishments where a person can leave saying “the owner almost broke my arm” and mean it in a possible light. So in a lot of ways, as a company that deals primarily in Jiu Jitsu, we are kind of traveling on uncharted waters.
