We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Stevaughn Bush a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Stevaughn, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
I started my law firm because of the lack of zealous advocacy in the legal industry. I strive to provide legal protection to minority-owned businesses and families, which is lacking in the industry due to a number of factors.
Stevaughn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have always been a student of history and have done what I could to help remedy social injustice. I attended Howard University School of Law where I learned more about legal issues that have created justice gaps in our society. I am happy to bring a spirit of zealous advocacy to each case that the office takes on.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I think the biggest thing that business owners have to learn is that they are not entitled to people’s hard-earned money. They must show everyday that they are worth every penny and more. It’s a lot of work–but that is the world of business. This lesson gets harder as you grow more successful, but it is imperative for each business to understand this.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
I read a book before starting my practice, and it explained the concept of “Leadership draft”. In summary, the concept of leadership draft is that the people around you will only be as excited about the business and as effective as they can be if they see that the leader truly believes in the mission. To do well as business, it is important to have leadership that is present and energetic.
