We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Stephen Starbuck. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Stephen below.
Hi Stephen, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
When I was going through therapy for my traumatic brain injury one of the therapies was art. It was to help with my hand coordination and help with rebuilding neuro pathways among other things. Once I retired I kept doing it and experimenting with different forms and surfaces.
Stephen, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
After serving in the Army for 26.5 years and suffering several longterm injuries art has proven a stabilizer for me and my everyday life. It has allowed me to connect with a wonderful community and allowed me to expand my creative side.
My art expands beyond the canvas and into woodworking, metalwork and leather craft. Often encompassing some or all of those. I see myself as a craftsman with and artistic side.
I donate a lot of my work to veteran non-profits to help them raise money for those in need. I get a lot of self fulfillment from that. Kind of recharging to soul.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me it is seeing someone smile and the light Click on after they hear the backstory to the piece and now they see it. Not only see it but feel it because now they are apart of that story. It is awesome.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission with my journey is to be able to provide a sense of pleasure and knowing through my art. When they look at it it is more than a piece. It is part of someone’s history that is living on through them and now they can share that with others.
