We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Stephen Farrow a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Stephen, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
A lot of Hard work, sleepless nights, broken promises, and even a little heartbreak make you a successful person. You have to be determined and focused. Like at one point I was going out partying and all that but I have a partner who’s very successful and he never partied or hung out but when he did go out it was so exclusive that the people he would be with would need his services and he was always working so that made me change my focus. Then I have to have positive people around me. Good energy is key. Teamwork makes the dreamwork so make sure you have a team of people that are great at what they do and love doing it.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Stephen “DotCom” Farrow. I’m the owner of Studio at da Station 549 Atl and one of the mixing engineers for Quality Control. Been in the industry for 10 yrs I got my first start working with NEA Ent and the Kooly Bros. Since then I’ve helped develop the careers of Lil Yachty, Toosi, Lil Baby, and Renni Rucci. I’ve also assisted on mixing some of the biggest songs of this decade Lil Baby Woah, My Turn, Sum to Prove, City Girls Act Up, and Pop Smoke For the Night. As a seasoned vet i can mix analog in the box or hybrid so I don’t have a set method when it comes to mixing but I have a love and understanding of sound and a want to have it sound best as it possible can for the world to enjoy. My sound is my Quality so I have to give it my best.
In my studios I use the same setup. It’s a easy to use system with the same quality sound at an affordable rate. Mac cpu, Slate Raven, UAD Apollo, Slate Mic, Kaotica Eyeball. My rooms (3) are treated and its a comfortable private vibe for your creative needs. Check us out Studioatdastation549atl.com or call 800-572-7020

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Once I started making a name for mixing I was making $1000 a week as a engineer at QC but I was charging $300 to mix and had 10 songs a week. Being a tracking or studio engineer is time consuming so I had to decide did I want to be the $1000 a week guy from QC or step out and be the 12k a month Dotcom so I created StudioatDaStation549Atl. Once I had my business established and growing I was able to go back to QC to help with the mixing and post production side. Now it’s a beautiful balance between both worlds.
Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
This was a eye opener for me so I’ll share it. NOBODY will post your business for FREE!!!! I’m here working with all these artist that have influence and a following but they’re not gonna post your business. Go ahead pay for the ads pay for the marketing and grow your business and once you pipe it up they will join the wave but by then it wont even matter. It’s Business not Personal so handle it accordingly. With business no marketing or promo means no cash flow!!
