We were lucky to catch up with Stephen Condon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Stephen, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Started growing a huge beard back in 2012 way before the craze. Saw over in UK they were making oils for beards. SHipped it over and started making it in my kitchen. Found a cosmetic manufacturer to copy my formulas. I have a degree in graphic design and branding so i designed the packaging and Bossman was born in 2014.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Born an artist and inventor type. Graduated from Texas State with Branding/ Graphics degree. Concept, built and owned 5 bars around downtown Austin. Started Bossman still owning a couple bars. Back then social media wasn’t a thing to get products out to the public, so i filled 100k perfume vials of beard oil and taped a card with info about beard oil and the website since no one knew what beard oil was yet. The site blew up and the samples ROI was incredible. Once Bossman started blowing up I sold the bars and went full steam ahead.
Proud of making unique, HIGH quality products without stealing peoples money like most cosmetic companies one the market. Just owning the tm of the name and the website bossman.com makes me proud and shows how big this will become.
We started with beard but our full body line is extending as we speak. Once the line is full we will take strategic partners and take over the world. For now organic growth has been perfectly fine.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
Bossman was scaling too fast and I needed help. I posted on Facebook “Hey my business is blowing up, I am looking for strategic help” A friend of a friend tagged my current business partner Travis to the feed, met up and knew it was a done deal that day. He is a top 50 seller on Amazon, my mentor looked at his numbers on Amazon and said “YES partner with him ASAP. Now we are one of the leaders on Amazon in our category.
We’d love to hear your thoughts about selling platforms like Amazon/Etsy vs selling on your own site.
Yes we sell on the site, but Amazon is our baby.
Pros: ads are a lot cheaper and better ROA. People actually read the reviews and aren’t fake like on everyones website.
Each listing is loaded with information and numerous ways to show imagery and list information. Amazon makes sure the small “homebrew” have proper FDA licenses so you are getting a legit product. PRIME!!! customers can get my product next day free!
Cons: you cant get customer information so you just better have a good product. Very tough to rank it be shown on top searches. Amazon backend is just a totally different animal.
