We recently connected with Stephen Cadwell and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Stephen, thanks for joining us today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
While I’m still nowhere near the success that I hope of achieving, the process to get to where I am now was very long. I began recording my first songs on my flip phone in the third grade which transitioned into writing little raps. These were songs I never recorded in a studio or ever shared with anyone. Even after coming up with the name “KillA CAD” four years later, the fear of sharing my music with anyone was still strong. It took another four years for me to officially record and release my first song “Press Conference” on SoundCloud. A year later, I started consistently dropping under the name “KillA CAD” and the more I made music, new ideas began to run through my mind.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a rapper that specializes in lyricism and entertainment. Known for my versatility that is enhanced when seen live, my music ranges from very layered and intricate tracks to one-layered raps with only one verse. I am most proud of my subject matter, which is one of the reasons that sets me apart from others. My goal to comfort and encourage others has always allowed my music to be vulnerable. By addressing my personal issues and the life I am experiencing, I have been able to connect with people through my music. Having people tell me how something I work so hard on inspires them to go after everything they want in life will always be my greatest accomplishment. Along with this, if you haven’t seen “BIG CAD LIVE” you are absolutely missing out.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Fear has had a long lasting affect on my life for a long time. I’ve made a lot of music early and deferred many chances to share said songs out of fear of people not liking it, people thinking I’m just copying my brothers, and wondering what my parents would think. What ultimately brought me out of this fear came from opening up to my father about what I wanted to do. Building up the courage to tell him that I wanted to rap took a lot. His response was supportive and he told me to do what I love unapologetically. From that moment forward I began to move more confidently as an artist.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Being who I am. From the many great qualities I’ve gained from my family to the ridiculous fun my friends and I had growing up, all of these experiences molded me into who I am. Even as I evolve as an artist, this foundation will never change and be a pillar in my career.
