We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Stephanie Wisniewski a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Stephanie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Sacrifice. I always say that success comes at a cost, and it is the willingness to sacrifice. Specifically to my industry, i presume this to be true. Hair stylists do not receive compensation if they are not actively behind the chair. No PTO or sick time. Through my 10 years in the industry I have gone through family deaths, health issues, and plenty of sick days and the unfortunate truth is some clients will not wait for you. Very early on I realized this industry is a revolving door and although I’m an advocate for work/life balance I do value my responsibility of being 100% communicative and compassionate to my clients to keep that relationship strong.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I decided my senior year of high school that I wanted to pursue cosmetology school. My great aunt and uncle owned a salon for countless years and I spent a lot of time there with my Grandma while she got her hair done. I would sit for hours while her color processed and my eyes would jump all over the room. I was so intrigued. Smiles lit up that salon every time i walked in. The energy was something exceptional and one day I was hooked, I wanted to make people feel that beautiful. I wanted to be the pick me up after a long day at work, hard week with the kids, whatever it was I just knew I wanted to bring that good to someones life and touch as many as possible.
I’ve been a hair stylist for 10 years and just wrapped up my first year as a business owner to The Artistry Loft. I offer a wide multitude of hair services, facial waxing, and am also a certified lash lift technician. Working behind the chair solo has been an incredible blessing to me. I really enjoy the intimate setting and my one on one time with each of my clients.
I never know how to really answer this question what sets me apart from others. I think there is so much incredible talent in the hair industry and its evolving every day. But if you think about it what a blessing, right? The more exceptional hair stylists the more beautiful we can make the world! If there is anything that sets me apart from others is the relationships I’ve built with my clients. If you’ve ever heard the saying “my hair stylist is my therapist?” You guessed it. That’s me. I love connecting with my clients on a deeper level, and it all just happens organically. My number one goal is always that my clients know my loft is a safe space for them. They are an important part of my career and success, and I’m thankful that we build solid bonds to share.
I’m always accept new clients! I love meeting new people, sharing our stories, and creating beautiful hair.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
I stay connected with my clients through my personally phone 90% of the time. Few use square online for appointment booking or messaging me. Most of my clients pre book for their next appointment before they leave the salon which helps keeps things consistent. If theres a client I haven’t seen in awhile I will send out a follow up message just to see how they/their hair has been.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Obtaining professionalism and maintaining good relationships! My cosmetology teacher always said move gracefully through this industry because people know people. From that I’ve learned to just be open and honest! Sometimes you have to leave a salon you’re not happy at and sometimes you have to let a client go because you aren’t a good fit for each other. I think accepting that and learning how to move through it gracefully has helped withhold a positive reputation for me.
