Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Stephanie Weirathmueller. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Stephanie, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?

Stephanie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on is my art project, ‘Presence,’ which explores creating art while living with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). This project emerged from my personal journey with CFS, forcing me to adapt my art process to my health challenges. By finding tools and strategies to work within my limitations, I created ‘Presence’ to foster empathy, provide solace, and inspire dialogues about working with limitations. It aims to help others feel less alone and create a space for connection.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When I was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), creating art became incredibly challenging due to overwhelming fatigue. During a particularly tough period, I realized I may not get better so I started to think. How can I work within these limitations. I began a series of small drawings contrasting struggle and joy. Working in short bursts and resting frequently, I persevered and completed the series, which later turn into a show. The positive response from viewers, who found solace and inspiration in my work, reinforced my belief in finding inspiration from my struggles, from my experience. This also deepened my commitment to creating and sharing my life and journey with illness through art, and working with the obstacles.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
To support artists with chronic illnesses, we need to keep improving the application process for funding. While there are some supports in place, it’s important to find new ways to meet diverse needs. For example, artists with chronic fatigue would benefit from easier access to application assistance and templates to express their project ideas. This ensures they can access resources and share their unique perspectives through art.
