We were lucky to catch up with Stephanie Toxey recently and have shared our conversation below.
Stephanie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I always knew I wanted to attempt to make a difference in the world somehow, some way. The idea to start a business has always been a dream of mine just because of what my mom instilled in me as a child. I can do anything, I am somebody. Growing up doing hair was always something I truly loved from doing my sisters hair to learning what works and what doesn’t. Even down to teaching others about their own hair. In my early 20’s I figured “hey” since I have so much knowledge in hair why not just start a business. It wasn’t until late 2020 when I officially started. I was so proud of myself when I got my first sale, but since having a baby and new achievements in life are coming about I have put it on hold. By the beginning of 2023 I do plan on relaunching, rebranding and just going straight into the business world!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello everyone! My name is Stephanie Toxey or _Stefcurly on social media platforms. I am a natural hair content creator and upcoming business woman. I create content that will help you get through all of your natural hair struggles. Such as learning how to transition, tips on how to keep your hair healthy and hydrated and maintaining protective styles. My hair care business leans more towards women of color with curly hair who have had a hard time finding the right product that works with their hair. I am making it my mission to make natural hair care easier and less stressful. I am most proud of sticking through with the goals that I’ve set for myself. The younger me would always start something but never finish. The main things I want is for my potential customers to love their product and to know that they are not alone in their journey.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When I first started my business I was so excited, I thought everything was gonna be smooth sailing. My product was going to be great and everyone was gonna buy it especially my supporters on Instagram. I was wrong about that, not about it being great because it is. There is just so much more work and effort you have to put in to serious get it off or the ground especially when you’re doing it from scratch and on your own. I understand now that it’s a process and everything takes time.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Funding my business is ultimately using the money that I make from my 9-5 to purchase everything that I need to start my business. It’s all about sacrifice, in order to get to where I want to be I have to spend some money to make money. Some days are challenging but I know I can do it.
