We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Stephanie Strickland a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Stephanie, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
One of my favorite quotes is by Maya Angelou and it says, “You have no idea what your legacy will be because your legacy is every life you touch.” As an author, my prayer is that my books inspire everyone who reads them especially women. As a speaker, when I speak at conferences mostly filled with victims and survivors of domestic violence, I want my words to encourage the women that are listening to not be afraid to use to take their life back. When people see me or read one of my books, I want to inspire them to go after the life God created them for. I really don’t care what people say about me, but I do want to be remembered as a woman who found her voice. A woman who walked by faith. A woman who was fierce and courageous. A woman who did not live in the shame of the trauma I endured from my past. I want to be remembered as a victor and not a victim.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Stephanie Strickland, I am an award-winning author, a public speaker and an advocate for women who have experienced domestic violence. I am also a survivor of domestic violence. In my book ” Finding Peace Within” I share my journey of love and abuse, and my triumph over it all. I was a recipient of the 2023 Henri Christian Literary award, in the “Break-Through” category. I am currently working on my second book, and in 2025 I will be holding workshops both in person and virtually to help victims and survivors of abuse. When I am not busy writing, I volunteer at shelters, speak at women conferences, and make appearances on podcast bringing awareness to domestic violence.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Being a survivor of domestic violence, I made a promise to God and myself that I would share my story. So many women of domestic violence stay silent. Even after they have left the relationship, the shame of being a victim keeps them quiet. By sharing my story, I am giving a voice to those women, who are still dealing with the strongholds of abuse. My goal is to help women overcome the shame they feel due to being in an abusive relationship. My mission is to help women of abuse find their voice so together we can break the silence on domestic violence. There is life after abuse.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I really don’t have a plan on how I built my audience on social media. What I try to do is stay authentic and stick to my purpose.
As an advocate for domestic violence, I share the myths, facts, statistics, and information on abuse. I share my story, and stories of other survivors. I post resources on where a woman who is experiencing abuse can find hope. I share encouraging quotes as posts and as videos. My advice for those just starting to build a social media presence, is to stay genuine. Try not to follow the trends. Stay consistent and make sure your posts are relevant to your brand.
