We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Stephanie Rubio. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Stephanie below.
Stephanie, appreciate you joining us today. Covid has brought about so many changes – has your business model changed?
Two days before Christmas 2020, I received an odd call.
Looking back, I remember seeing my husband’s face as a client told me they wanted to “pivot” their business and launch a new project.
This theme was recurring for several retainer clients I worked with that year. Coupled with fear due to the pandemic, it was a recipe for extreme burnout and resentment. I knew they were scared and feared the unknown, so I gave in.
I was always available, always willing to work seven days straight and over 18/20 hours a day because hell, “I should be so grateful I had work when so many didn’t.” We grew up believing that the customer is always right. Wrong. The anxiety and PTSD aren’t worth it.
Reaching revenue goals will fix some things; branding, marketing, systems, pretty photography, pretty fonts, and a cute color scheme do not fix everything. The work of building a successful brand starts within. It begins with YOU.
Things are so much more aligned now, and as I confidently move through to my eighth year in business (and beyond), I have learned hard lessons, but they are my lessons. 2020 was a very different year; I will never forget it.
To have more balance within my business, I’ve revised my entire business plan and have niched from a full-service marketing agency to a boutique agency specializing in Email & Content Marketing. This change has allowed me to price our services more competitively; we can now build better rapport with our clients and offer a more streamlined level of service.
Thank you for sharing that with us.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
I have become increasingly proficient at staying connected with and nurturing our clients. Given that most of our clients are US-based, I have found the most success in understanding that “Communication is King.”
For us here at SoVerve Marketing Group, that can look like checking in with my clients regularly via monthly Google Meet, paying attention to a client’s birthday, anniversary, or launch-very (business founding or launch date), or something as simple as sending just-because care packages to upper management and office staff.
Beyond the contract, it is also crucial to offer value-added items to clients through free resources, personalized newsletters, and, in our case, a private podcast feed with exclusive content reserved only for our clients.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
To build a successful digital marketing presence, I’ve focused first on building trust and offering value to our marketing clients. Many people focus on the community aspects when your focus should always be on your clients.
Secondary to this, I’ve focused on developing genuine relationships with our colleagues and competitors by providing support via our Sip & Share Sessions. These interactive coffee chats foster a supportive work environment for our colleagues online. It allows us to connect (one-on-one), share progress on individual projects, and discuss goals and challenges.
The SoVerve Lounge also became essential to our community-building strategy because, through our monthly interviews, we celebrated their successes loudly and publicly.
