We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Stephanie Orsomarso. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Stephanie below.
Stephanie, appreciate you joining us today. Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.
The singular, and most important thing that my parents (my dad and mom) did right, was by putting God first in everything they did in their lives and careers. I know my life and career wouldn’t even be close to what it is now, had they not made that decision for themselves and for our family. My dad is a successful business owner himself (a graphic designer, website and content creator, photographer, etc.) and my mom is a professional painter (my siblings are also creatives themselves.) My parents have shown me, by example, what it is like to be both a business owner and a creative and then all the important things that go along with that in order to be successful.
I am so thankful for the job that I have as a Makeup Artist and Hairstylist and I know that growing up in a home with parents like mine, really helped cultivate who I am as a person today in my life and also my career. Being in the beauty industry obviously has a lot to do with being an expert in makeup artistry and hairstyling, however being a successful one means being the type of person people want to work with. You need to be hard working, trustworthy, kind, honest, reliable, consistent and so many other things, and they dont teach you that at beauty school. Ultimately, I know that God blessed me with a talent and I am so thankful to be able to use that to work with hundreds of clients every year.

Stephanie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Funny story, I actually went to college to be an elementary school math teacher, which I am so thankful that I never fully pursued. I came home from college, went back to work where I did as a teenager (Panera Bread) and simultaneously went to a local community college trying to figure out what I wanted to do. One day at Panera, another girl I worked with came in and mentioned she just finished Cosmetology school, and I thought that sounded like something I might like and be able to do! I grew up with three siblings, two of which were my younger sisters and I constantly was doing their hair and makeup for proms, balls, events, etc. So from there I went to Cosmetology school and instantly I LOVED it! I think my teachers quickly observed that I loved specific areas of the beauty industry, hairstyling and makeup artistry. After my graduation I attended a month long boot camp in NYC called Arrojo Bootcamp (he is the hair stylist on the show “What not to Wear”.) I helped open a Sephora and worked there for a bit as an Artist. Not too long after that I attended a Master Class by Kim Kardashians makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic (Kim was the model) and that was a pivotal point in my education. From there on I learned exactly the type of makeup I loved, which was a soft glam style and then paired it with event hairstyling. I pursued it even further and took another one of Mario’s classes for makeup and then another class from celebrity hairstylist Senada Ceka.
The services I love the and provide most often are Bridal Makeup & Hairstyling (I do also provide special event glam, lifestyle, etc.) I love the bridal industry the most because I have the opportunity to help clients feel and look like the very best version of themselves. If I am being completely honest, weddings are so special and amazing but can often be the source of a lot of stress, and most clients tell me that I offer them such a peaceful and relaxing experience with just my presence and then also give them the best glam they have ever had in their life (and are so thankful to have on such an important day.)
I think what sets me apart in the beauty industry from others is that I have spent so much of my spare time and finances into educating myself. I feel like there is always room for growth for advancing my skill and I am so eager to learn the techniques from some of the top artist in the business. Anyone in the beauty industry knows that it is constantly evolving and the number of products that come out weekly can honestly be overwhelming. But to stay relevant and in this industry, you have to try new products, you have to stay humble and educate yourself, and know it is a time commitment and hard work, but its worth it.
I am most proud of being able to say that this isn’t just a job I have to make money, it is a career that I am so thankful for and genuinely love and enjoy. I have clients from all over the United States (and even some international) that I otherwise never would of met and have made so many memories and even friends at the end of the day. It’s a gift and a blessing.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I once believed to be true that you could/should have only talent and skill and nothing else in a business. There was a season in my life where I felt like no one would know anything about me, it would purely be a job that was transactional and that was enough. But what a lie haha, I actually remember thinking there was a point where I started questioning why I had thought that? And then I started thinking about people I had gone to myself for nails, hair, doctors, etc. and why exactly I went to them. It wasn’t just about their skill/technique, it was also who they were as a person, I cared about them and wanted to support them, I trusted them and wanted to learn more. I slowly started opening myself up to people, letting them know more about me and who I was, where I came from, that I was married with three kids, where I grew up, how I got into the industry, why I stay in the industry and thats when everything really started to change. I believe that God has a plan and a purpose in everything in life, you have one life to live on this earth, you have a talent and a skill and how can you use that to love and help others, and this is how I use mine.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
I would say that most of my clients come from either social media or word of mouth. We live in a day and age where everyone has an online presence that shows not only their business/skill but who exactly is behind it. I have a tiny little corner of the world where people can get a glimpse of who I am, what I know, people I’ve worked, what my work looks like and I’m so thankful it helps bring people to me.
