We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Stephanie Nguyen. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Stephanie below.
Stephanie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
I had always worked in women’s health, either as a Registered Nurse or as a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner. It wasn’t until I had my own children that I realized the industry was lacking in prenatal/postpartum/breastfeeding support. I decided I wanted to change that by creating a unique space for expecting and new parents to learn, connect and find support in a modern and welcoming environment.
My husband and I went to work creating a business plan and doing some research and we both felt like this would be a good niche to start our new business idea.
Our business, Modern Milk, is now going on its 9th year and we have helped over 20,000 families in the Scottsdale/Phoenix area! We have a few principles that we stand by which I feel has helped with our success. One of these main principles is that when we find something that works, be it a class or service, we then try to focus on how we can make that the best service we can, as opposed to always jumping around from service to service without any focus.
If I were to give any advice to someone starting their own practice, it would be to know that the first year or two will be challenging. If you can anticipate this and work it into your overall business plan, you’ll have a a more positive perspective when starting your new business!

Stephanie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Modern Milk is a community wellness center that was created to educate, encourage, and empower today’s modern mom. We offer a variety of prenatal and postpartum classes, lactation support, fitness classes and our signature mom group, Happy mom School! From pregnancy to toddlerhood, we have a variety of services to support parents in all stages of parenthood.
I am most proud of our Happy Mom School groups because it provides the connection and support that new moms need. We group new moms together based on their baby’s birth month so they can be surrounded by other moms who are going through the same thing.
I think what sets us apart is our modern, research based approach to pregnancy and parenting. We are helping to provide relevant, research based information in a modern and comfortable environment, which isn’t the norm.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
The pandemic was a very hard time to navigate this type of business. Recommendations and precautions were constantly changing and we had a population of parents that were very cautious given that they were either expecting or had a new baby. When the shutdown happened we had to quickly move towards online classes and some small in person classes. Needless to say, our overall volume decreased significantly. Although our business was able to survive during this time, we did have a second location that we sadly decided to close permanently. It pained me to do this as I knew so many families relied on our support in this area, but it was one of those tough business decisions that had to be done.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
What has helped build our reputation within our market the most is word of mouth testimonials. Hands down. New parents tell their friends who are having babies or share their experience with their OB or pediatrician and it just continues to spread. After 9 years, so many people in our area know about Modern Milk, it’s kind of amazing to know that we started this!
