We were lucky to catch up with Stephanie Nery recently and have shared our conversation below.
Stephanie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
When I started with makeup, it wasn’t a career choice that was respected by many, and a lot of people close to me doubted my decision. They thought it would be more like a hobby and didn’t believe I would make it. As I invested more time in creating content and expanding my knowledge in creative makeup, many people made fun of me. They told me I would never make it, and called me crazy for pursuing a path that seemed so unconventional at the time. There were so many moments when I felt misunderstood and mischaracterized, especially by those who couldn’t see the potential in combining art with a beauty career.
Now, we live in a time where people are encouraged to be more creative and express themselves freely online, which has made it easier for many to find acceptance. But back then, it wasn’t the norm, and I went through a lot of judgment for choosing makeup as my career. Over time, however, I’ve learned that following your passion even when it’s not understood by others can lead to incredible things. The key takeaway from that experience is that not everyone will see your vision at first and it might be a lonely journey, but staying true to what drives you can eventually turn doubt into validation. Creativity doesn’t always fit into traditional molds, and that’s what makes it powerful.
Stephanie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Stephanie, a passionate and dedicated makeup artist with over 12 years of experience. I was born in the USA, but my multicultural background and time spent in England, New Zealand, and Brazil have really influenced my approach to makeup. I’m fluent in English and Portuguese, and I also speak some Spanish, which helps me connect with clients from all over the world.
I got into makeup artistry because it’s something that fascinated me, the artistry and possibilities and what started as a personal passion turned into a full-time career, even though at the time it wasn’t something a lot of people took seriously. There were plenty of doubters, but I stuck with it and now I’m lucky enough to work with all kinds of clients, from brides to celebrities, corporate events, and everything in between. I’ve done everything from TV and film projects to music festivals, bodybuilding competitions, boudoir shoots, and even teaching classes at large gaming & cosplay events.
What sets me apart is that I’m versatile and passionate about what I do, I can create any look and I always do it with enthusiasm and love. I’ve worked on projects of all sizes, I’m all about making my clients feel confident and beautiful, and I pride myself on being approachable and professional.
What I’m most proud of is how far I’ve come in my career, and the reputation I’ve built as someone who’s reliable and truly cares about getting the best results for every client. I want people to know that whether it’s a small event or a huge production, I’ll always give my all.
I am a Mobile makeup artist, my innovative setup can cater to any event, all sizes.
Corporate, Festivals, weddings, Parties, Photoshoots, video shoots, Live events, Tv & Film…You name it!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A key lesson I had to unlearn was the idea that success in makeup artistry meant sticking to traditional, rigid formats or only working with certain types of clients. Early on, I thought I had to choose a specific niche or follow a set path to make it in the industry like focusing solely on bridal makeup or high-fashion work. But as I gained more experience and started embracing my creativity, I realized that the beauty of makeup artistry is in its versatility and ability to adapt to any occasion.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding part of being a makeup artist is how makeup can really change the way someone feels about themselves. It much more than just makeup!
I also love the creativity it lets me tap into. Every project is a chance to try something new, whether it’s an artistic editorial look or a fun Halloween transformation. There’s always something fresh to explore, and I really enjoy bringing those ideas to life.
When a client sees their finished look and lights up, or when my work helps make a bigger production come together, it just feels like all the effort is worth it. It’s that mix of creativity, making people feel great, and building relationships that keeps me loving what I do.
