We were lucky to catch up with Stephanie Moss recently and have shared our conversation below.
Stephanie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How’s you first get into your field – what was your first job in this field?
When I was in pharmacy school I was able to do several rotations to decide which area pharmacy I liked best. When you first enter school, working retail is typically all that you are familiar with. After having several opportunities to work in so many different areas of pharmacy, I received an internship with a pharmaceutical company. This opened up my eyes to different ways that pharmacist can make an impact within industry. Completing that internship helped me to receive many opportunities for fellowships after pharmacy school. The fellowship that I chose gave me an opportunity to work in different areas a pharmaceutical industry from regulatory to research to marketing..
Stephanie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi! I’m Dr. Stephanie. The founder of Menopause in Color. I’m a mom, pharmacist, and perimenopause and menopause educator and advocate. I help women find their way through perimenopause and menopause by implementing simple health and wellness practices. I do this through corporate and community training and advocacy. During pharmacy school, we spent time learning about various diseases states and the drugs and lifestyle changes to help our patients. We spent time on women’s health but perimenopause and menopause wasn’t covered enough. I think this was the case for many health care professionals.
In my late 30’s to early 40’s, I started to experience symptoms that were concerning to me. Some of them included heart palpitations, itchy ears, low libido, and mood swings, just to name a few. After speaking to my doctor and running several different test without any findings, perimenopause was never mentioned to me. It was not until I started doing my own research, reading and studying that I realized that I could possibly be experiencing perimenopause. The years of not knowing what was happening to me took a toll on my mental health. It took me to reach that phase of my life to realize that I needed more info in order to thrive during perimenopause, I know that others needed it too. That’s when I decided to use my research skills to learn more about perimenopause and menopause in order to help others. I founded Menopause in Color to start an open and honest conversation about the changes women experience, and help them find the resources to understand and manage this important phase of life.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
If I had to choose, I would choose pharmacy again. There are so many different things that pharmacist can do. You can go the clinical route, or choose to go into business side of things. Pharmacist are trusted and accessible. They spend a lot of time with patients and can help with prescription, over the counter or lifestyle solutions. One thing I would change would be to spend more time on menopause and perimenopause while in pharmacy. While I think that increasing my knowledge about the transition would have been helpful while in school, going through it myself has given me a different perspective
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
I think my compassion for the women in my community is what really helps me succeed. I not only understand what they are going through, but I care. I want to make sure that we educate as many people as possible about how to live a healthy and vibrant life during perimenopause and menopause.
