Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Stephanie Lay. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Stephanie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
After college and two degrees later I realized quickly that working for other people was not what I wanted. I dreaded going to work everyday and not having anything of value come from all the hard work. Time off was very limited and I knew something needed to change. After some research and self discovery, I decided now is the perfect time to start a business because if not now I may never do it. A week later I purchased all the necessary equipment and created an Auto Detailing company. At a very young age I was involved with cars. To this day cars is still a hobby of mine. My Father was the biggest inspiration for me to pursue a business related to cars. He was a Drag car racer which is where I got the name Pitstop Detailing.
My company as of right now is only mobile in Michigan’s SouthWest areas which brings ultimate convenience to all our customers, additionally they don’t have to take any time off from work as we come to any location, even their workplace!
Maintaining my customers vehicles is very rewarding because they appreciate their cars just as much as Ive always appreciated mine. Waking up everyday is so much more enjoyable now that I have something worth working towards.
Stephanie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Stephanie Lay and I am the owner of Pitstop Detailing. With Pitstop Detailing, I offer services on more than just cars! I also work on boats, RVs, motorcycles, or UTVs, anything with wheels you name it! I got into detailing because I feel the market in my area was lacking of a few services I wanted. Being an owner of a classic car I wanted everything done correctly and with care so that created my journey into detailing. When someone thinks of detailing they mostly think “Just a quick wipe down and vacuum” but really it’s more than that. Detailing is an art.
When I started my business I wanted to make sure communication, trust, and satisfaction was always met and they got to experience the best customer service they’ve ever had within a small business.
As a mobile detailing company, When I show up to an appointment at a customer’s location I want them to know everything will be done exceptionally well and with care for the tasks they need done on their car. Whether it’s a simple interior clean or a paint correction to the exterior, Pitstop Detailing goes above and beyond to exceed expectations.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
My advice to those trying to gain more presence on social media are fairly straightforward. I’ve learned that there are three main factors to follow. Number one is to always be entertaining to your followers. If you aren’t entertaining, they won’t have interest in your service or product and will find something else that grabs their attention more. So that includes making amazing videos or taking great pictures! Number two is to educate your audience. As an auto detailing company, I like to teach tips, tricks, and reviews on products I use. Most people love to learn something new especially if it’s their hobby! And lastly is inspiring your audience. I absolutely love telling my story and giving motivation to others who want a change in their life like starting a business or selling a product. Sometimes all someone needs is a little guidance.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
Before I started Pitstop Detailing I worked many random jobs. In the last 8 years I spent most of my time working two of them. It took me a long time to realize that what I was doing wasn’t fulfilling which made every job I had seem miserable, even if they were great places to work. I decided starting my own business would give me something to work hard at every single day. So with that, I worked full time night shift at my regular job while detailing during the day. The business was slow at first, I used my social media to gain customers just to get started and with the help of family and friends. That was very hard considering the lack of sleep but after a few short months and with satisfied customers word of mouth, I was detailing full time!
