Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to STEPHANIE KING. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
STEPHANIE, appreciate you joining us today. Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.
My mom was a hard worker. She taught my sister and I the value of a great education, reading, listening, and understanding. When I was younger my mom was a nursing assistant while attending school to be a nurse. It was a very stressful time for us. He hair fell out but she never gave up. I watched my mom study day and night. She passed the nursing exam and became a nurse. All of her dreams were coming true. She bought a house and we each had our own room. It is because of what my mom instilled in me that I am this creative person that you see today. I will never give up. I will never quit. I will continue to dream and dream big. It is my belief that dreams are God’s way of showing us what’s possible but it’s up to us to trust in him and work hard to make those dreams a reality.
STEPHANIE, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I was born and raised in Georgia. I come from a big family. I am the oldest granddaughter on my mom’s side and I’m the oldest sister. I got into this industry by sheer coincidence. I was at the gym working out struggling with wearing my ring and workout gloves at the same time. Most times I would tuck my ring into the opening of my sports bra. I just wanted comfort while I was lifting weights. One day I got the bright idea to cut a slit in the opening of my workout glove. I immediately felt instant relief. From there… Peek-a-Boo Gloves was born. One of the things I am most proud of is how far I’ve come with this new business venture. I’ve sold many things for other companies to help make them money so now I feel like since this is my brand, my company, I’m going to be team no sleep until I reach my goal of having Peek-a-Boo Gloves on every shelf in every store.
I want potential customers to understand that the old way of wearing gloves is over. We will no longer compromise between having cold hands or not wearing our rings. Peek-a-Boo Gloves is the best option. We are a luxury brand of gloves for people who want comfort, who want to wear their rings while keeping their hands warm.
Okay – so how did you figure out the manufacturing part? Did you have prior experience?
I have my products manufactured. It was a long process of sketching my designs, getting fabric samples, looking at colors, and trying to decide what would make my product top notch. My first glove designer was a designer named Sadio out of Atlanta. He took my sketch and created my first pair of Peek-a-Boo Gloves in some beautiful colors. The next year I went with another company so that I could get bulk gloves in other colors. We talked back and forth, did ZOOM calls, sent sketches again until I was pleased with the final product. The hardest part of working with manufacturers was making sure my product or my vision was exactly how I wanted it. I also was working on my patent because I didn’t want anyone to steal my idea. I was nervous, scared, and unsure. My advice to anyone who is looking to get a product manufactured is to make sure your vision is clear. Make sure you don’t compromise with want you really want, and also make sure the the product is to your liking.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I am team no debt. I fund my business by saving money and from the sales of my gloves. Each month I put aside money in an envelope for things that I might need or business things that might come up. So far it has worked out. I didn’t want a bank loan because at the time I didn’t believe in myself or my product enough. I wanted to build a debt free company and so far I’ve been successful at doing so. It may not be the best way but it’s working great for me.
