Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Stephanie Johnson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Stephanie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Where to begin, I started making luxury candles November 2021. I suffered a miscarriage and depression was weighing heavy on me at the time. I was just an emotional wreck. I was going through alot at the time. I’ve always found myself lighting candles to just add that extra umph, calm my surroundings, and just relax to find my inner peace. One particular day, when going to light a candle, it just wasn’t giving what it needed. So I thought to myself, how can I find quality candles that was strong scented but, still cute. The next thing you know I started ordering supplies and here we are today as Melanin Eccentrix Candles. It wasn’t as easy as I thought, I definitely ran into some trial and error. After some extensive research, I finally figured it out, and once I lit the candle it was giving what it needed. I was impressed with myself, that I created something so beautiful. I knew at that moment this is what I needed to do.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am just a simple city gal from Dallas, TX. I grew up in Dallas but, I have visted many places. I am very family oriented. I have two beautiful children that I continue to work hard for. So, being a small business owner/entrepreneur, definitely has its challenges. I’ve stayed up on many nights trying to perfect my craft. Some days were easier than others, but the look on my clients face/the feedback I have received, lets me know that the hard work I put into this is worth it. I provide luxury handmade candles, wax melt bars and wax crumbles at the moment. We will being adding more products soon. Being that all my product is handmade, is something my clients really love and it keeps them coming back. I put time, sweat, and dedication to make sure my products are top notch for my clients. I continue to strive for the best and that is what my clients will receive.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele, has been by word of mouth. I’ve always heard the saying, “you might know people, that know some people” which is very true. When I first started marketing, I’ve learned to take my time to produce quality product photos, and have some information to provide new clientele with, if not some type of business card. Networking is also a main factor for gaining clientele.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Having social media presence is very important. The times that we are living in today, social meadia is a key factor. It can be tricky, especially not knowing where to start or if you will gain followers or new clientele. My advice would be to view trending topics to compare how you would like your business to be presented to the public eye. Knowing what people like to see, gives you an idea on how you like to network amd market your business. Don’t get discouraged when you are not gaining attraction at first, it will definitely come. Have patience and faith in yourself knowing you got this and it will all work out.
