We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
When I lost my job, while still going through the COVID pains in society, I didn’t know what I was going to do. I didn’t want to get a whatever job, but also I wasn’t getting anywhere with the companies I was applying for. A couple friends had their own business and they started asking if I knew anything about social media marketing. I didn’t know much at the moment but I had all the time in the world to learn. So I started teaching myself, reading about the algorithm, teaching myself how to make graphics and videos that looked professional. Soon enough my friends were offering money to handle their social media while I found a job. But the word started to spread and what started as a size hustle began to take up all of my time. The more clients I was referred to the more I learned and improved my skills. Now I am on the process on creating a partnership and onboarding contractors so I can start expanding. It was something I didn’t know I was gonna be good at and very much enjoyed. But it turned out to be one of the best accidents that has ever happened to me.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I’ll tell you a bit about myself and the moment everything drastically changed in my life. I was born in Los Angeles California. But within months my mom was taking back to Mexico, where she resided. I lived a normal Mexican life (lol), my first job was when I was 9 years old, I help out at a school supply store, taking inventory, handling the register, etc. I still went to school and got straight As, when I turn 14 my mom didn’t think the schools available in the town we lived were good enough, so she packed up our belongings and set path to the United States. That’s when everything changed. Neither her nor I spoke English, so the first couple of months were really rough to say the least. I studied night and day just to keep up in school , take into consideration that my mother could not help me with my homework. We rented out a garaged in someone’s house to live in, since we had very little money. I remember that we kept to ourselves and tried to stay out of everyone’s way. My mom always put a lot of focus on my studies, thus soon enough I had learned the language and I was excelling in school. I got accepted to UCLA at the end of my high school career. First person in my family to go to college and even bigger accomplishment to have had graduated with a bachelors in economics.
I knew that my mom had made a huge sacrifice for me and I wasn’t going to take that for granted. My mom has been huge inspiration in starting my business and having the courage to start over, to fail and to get up, to take the risk. Thus, like her I took the risk and started my own company, and now moving forward to expand it.
