We were lucky to catch up with Stephanie Girard recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Stephanie , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to start by getting your thoughts on what you are seeing as some the biggest trends emerging in your industry.
The authentic aesthetic has always been the through line of my work but I think we are seeing slightly less requests for heavy character looks and now more hinting at it, while remaining true to the subjects personality. .
Actors are increasingly seeking additional images beyond traditional headshots—showcasing their bodies and personalities for IMDb and social media—a trend that adds layers to the storytelling and reflects the evolving needs of the industry.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I was born and raised outside of Boston and have been a headshot photographer in Los Angeles for over 16 years. After college I started my career in New York City, surrounded by artists. I photographed actors, dancers, and models. I then moved to Los Angeles where my career flourished. My studio is in Burbank, California, and I photograph actors (beginners to celebrities) directors, writers, and industry professionals.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a hobby into something much bigger.
When I stared shooting in New York years ago, I would get anyone I could in front of my camera. I did endless free shoots just to build my book, get experience until I felt it was ok to to charge people for my services. I wasn’t seeing it as a business yet, I just wanted to take beautiful authentic images and eventually people started paying me for it. Once I got to LA my career started to take off. I was lucky to be voted Best Headshot Photographer in LA by Backstage magazine 3 years in a row which was such an honor. From there my studio grew even more and flash forward to now I still get to come in and work with the best people and meet amazing talent every day.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I get to contribute toward my clients success. It is so rewarding to see the change in an Actors career after our shoot. Whether it be their auditions start to increase or they finally got in for that Casting director, or they booked the role! It is really amazing to have contributed toward that success.
