We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Stephanie George. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Stephanie below.
Hi Stephanie, thanks for joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
I wish I would have started taking myself seriously sooner, I’ve been in the business for 16 years on and off and have worn many jobs and worn many hats behind and in front of the scenes. If you are thinking of doing something do it now, don’t wait and put it off until later. If you do it, love it master it and study the business you are in. A lot of show business is about representation and being qualified so I have learned. As a creative director I know this takes time and experience, I knew it was going to be a journey but I knew that it would be worth it for me because it is my dream. When I was studying at AVeda, I’m soho I would sit in the break room and daydream about creative directing fun campaigns and music videos and now it’s happening. The best part of all of this is that I get to mix my art together, working as a movement coach has given me a different layer of fulfillment. Helping my clients grow and finding their own beat on set or on stage, that’s what makes me happy. I’ve always been tied to the world of dance, I am just so happy I am finally at the stage in my career where I have complete creative control.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Stephanie George and I am a creative director, I specialize in visual storytelling and movement. I started off as a Hair stylist after training at Aveda in New York City, I then branched out into TV and Film and fell in love with bringing both of my worlds together. I have worked infront and behind the camera and I heavily feel it inspires my work to see both sides. When I was younger it became apparent I visually impaired but did not have access to the glasses I needed so I would see things in a haze often with bright rings of color, and now for some reason it comforts me when I add it to my art. My work is inspired by the multifaceted jobs I do, the places I been to, and trauma.
As a creative director, I specialize in visual storytelling, particularly through music videos, live performances, and fashion projects. I’m known for incorporating vibrant colors and water elements into my work, which creates a distinct aesthetic that resonates with a wide audience. I also work as a movement coach and am inspired by the many cultures and people I grew up around. It’s been a dream to be able to creative direct a movement piece, and that’s exactly what I’ve been up to.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Having people express to me what my art means to them, what they see and feel when they experience it, that means the absolute world to me. When people take the time to keep up with what I’m doing and can sit and explain how it made them feel in that moment, that’s what makes me happy. Right now I’m working on a beautiful piece with some amazing artists called “Yemaya” it’s a cultural piece for me since I am Afro Latina, and also something I’ve been envisioning for a couple of years, I’ve been working on it with Chris Ungco who is an amazing cinematographer. Being able to see the vision and execute it is what makes being an artist so rewarding. Having my own style and maintaining it, is extremely important to me.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Provide artists with more paid opportunities to create things to add beauty to the world, helping us live without struggle would allow so much more space for creativity. Giving up the platforms and more chances to further our careers in what suits our art best. The world needs artists, they often explain what others can’t.
