We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Stephanie Crochet a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Stephanie , thanks for joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I love this question! In my opinion, to be successful one has to be honest, authentic, compassionate, creative, connected and energized. Those are the qualities that have made me successful, especially as I’ve gotten clearer on my mission in life. The business that I co-created with my partner Jocelyn Solomon is thriving because we are one hundred percent showing up in the world as ourselves and in alignment with our purpose and what brings us joy. A great example of that is our love for traveling and experiencing beautiful places and people. Together, and separately, we’ve been to and seen so much of the world. Our love for travel ripples into our retreats. We love people and have a way of making everyone feel important, seen and heard. As retreat leaders, that’s an important skill set to build community and connect people from different parts of the world. Before I became a yoga teacher I was a successful head hunter climbing the corporate ladder and hitting financial goals. By society’s measure of success I was doing amazing. However, those were not my happiest years and when I got certified to teach yoga, I knew deep down that I had to let go of what I thought was success and pursue this dream of teaching yoga all over the world. It was one of my best decisions!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a Los Angeles native with French and Tahitian roots – I genuinely have that joie de vivre and love of life. My favorite things in life are spectacular sunsets, adventures around the world (especially with my business partner and bff Jocelyn Solomon) soulful deep conversations and spending quality time with my husband and daughter. I love being present with the people I love the most in my life.
I took my first yoga teacher training in 2012 to advance my yoga practice and for personal growth. I had no idea that it would be a life changing experience. It opened the door to a part of myself I had not yet tapped into and marked the beginning of a life I truly love and authentically live. I continued to study for many years after my first teacher training as I was so fascinated by everything I was learning and experiencing – I still genuinely am! I have so much appreciation for yoga and all the different forms of yoga – I love that there is a form of yoga for every human being and body. Anyone who says they can’t do it, in my opinion, just hasn’t met the right teacher or type of yoga.
For 8 years I mostly taught vinyasa flow yoga at multiple studios in LA, as well as led local and international retreats. When the pandemic hit in 2020, it was in many ways a gift for me. I moved my business online which was something I was manifesting at the time. I was feeling depleted from teaching at different studios in LA and driving from one place to the next. I also become a mother in 2017 and wanted to spend more time with my daughter. 2020 was an opportunity to get really clear on what it is I want to share with the world. I started creating online content for moms and women who needed help resetting and regulating their nervous systems. That was also the time when I trained in deep relaxation practices and Yoga Nidra, which has been coined as non sleep deep rest. The pandemic, inspired me to learn more restorative yoga practices that were impactful and immediately effective in helping people with their stress and anxiety.
Today, I am so committed to helping people reset and regulate their central nervous system. I’m also committed and very clear in my desire to co-create and co-lead multiple retreats per year – my partner Jocelyn and I lead 6-8 sold out retreats every year since 2021. We are so committed to offering a safe space for our growing community to adventure this beautiful world, heal in community and be their authentic selves.
When I’m not on a retreat, I’m working online with clients and groups, helping them regulate their nervous systems so they can live more peaceful, balanced and authentic lives. My goal when I’m home from co-leading retreats is to regulate and reset my own nervous system – I do a really good job prioritizing my needs and my health. I’m a better mom, wife and teacher when I take care of myself. When I became a yoga teacher I had no idea that it would inspire me to live such an expansive, creative and authentic life. This is just one of the gifts I’ve gained from following my heart.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
When I made the switch from the corporate world to teaching yoga, it was effortless. I felt I was born to do this and that it was my calling. Given the immediate connection to my new career, I have found from the very beginning that being authentic has dramatically helped build my reputation. Additionally my continued education, since my initial teacher training, I have gone on to completing over 1,000 additional hours of advanced trainings. Students feel safe in my presence and trust my experience and knowledge.
How’d you meet your business partner?
I met my best friend and business partner Jocelyn Solomon during our first teacher training certification in 2012. After completing our first training we both had the desire to continue our education and pursue a career in yoga. Our integrity as teachers is very similar and aligned – we both care so much for the safety of all students. It was in 2019 that we decided to join forces and create a retreat business that is thriving. There is so much mutual love and respect between the two of us, we truly compliment each other in all the ways. I have so much admiration for Jocelyn’s sober curious business and her ability to make every human being feel heard, safe and important. She is a true advocate and voice for all those who need help! Together we create a safe space for our students.
