Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Stephanie Cadet. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Stephanie , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
The moment I knew I wanted to pursue art was a seemingly ordinary one in my ninth-grade drawing class. I remember flipping through my sketchbook and landing on one specific illustration—a cover piece of my original characters inspired by The Amazing World of Gumball, my favorite cartoon—and it hit me. I thought, “I want this to be a real show one day.” And even though I didn’t end up keeping that idea later on, that was the first time I discovered my life’s calling was to share my art and stories with the world.
Stephanie , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Stephanie Cadet and I’m a Haitian-American digital illustrator and animator. I love to draw and animate in a colorful and cartoony art style inspired by my love for anime, kids’ cartoons, and video games. I am also a graphic designer and video editor. My hobbies are gaming, writing, reading, singing, and I’m currently learning how to voice act and make original music. On the side, I teach part-time art lessons for children at my local elementary schools.
I got into the field of animation and illustration thanks to the support of my family and art teachers who always encouraged me to share my art. I received my BFA from Montclair State University in 2022, where I developed my character designing abilities and acquired new skills, such as game design and 3D animation. I continue to hone my craft today through teaching myself, absorbing new inspirations, and reaching out to professionals for advice. My work can be found online on my social media profiles and digital portfolio.
I create illustrations, comics, and animations featuring both copyrighted and original characters. I am also currently developing my original short animated series to be published in the coming years.
I believe that my diverse background and interests are what set me apart from others because it increases my scope of creativity. I was fortunate enough to have grown up in both a bilingual home and ethnically diverse neighborhood, so I appreciate and find creative inspiration in many different cultures. The creators behind my favorite stories also come from around the world, and I love mixing their influences with my personal experiences in my art.
I am most proud of my adaptability as a creative person. Because I am interested in so many facets of art, I can create in a variety of mediums and styles. I am also constantly experimenting with my work to be the most versatile artist I can be.
I would like people to know that my art is for everyone, no matter your age, background, or interests. In every creative thing I do, my goal is always to share lighthearted stories that can give everyone comfort and hope.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to unlearn is that you have to always be making art to be creative, which couldn’t be further from the truth. It used to be a chore to pull me away from my desk and drawing tablet! But right after I graduated college, I found myself with much more free time, and I discovered the balance of making art and taking time to recharge afterwards. Creativity is like a muscle, and it needs to have moments of rest in order to develop to its full potential. I now prioritize taking time to rest and find new inspirations just as much as drawing at my desk.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the ability to connect with people. Art tears down the barriers between us and connects us all on the basic human level—and I love tapping into that as a creative. Art is how I show people who I really am, and I get so much joy out of sharing something from my heart that makes people laugh, cry, or think deeply. It’s a wonderful feeling when I resonate with a story or character so much that it inspires me to make a story of my own, which will hopefully inspire someone else. Art makes my life so much more meaningful and beautiful.
