We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Stephanie Burrel. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Stephanie below.
Stephanie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the best advice you ever gave to a client? How did they benefit / what was the result? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
The best advice that I’ve ever given a client is this, “There is always a fresh start waiting for you whenever you need it.” I remember saying this to a client who had been battling a long, grueling addiction to prescription medication and food. One session while she was confessing how she had relapsed over the weekend; she began promising to herself and me that next week Monday would be the day that she started fresh and finally “got her stuff together.” As she spiraled down a rabbit hole of shame, guilt, and self-hatred, I interrupted her and exclaimed, “There is always a fresh start waiting for you whenever you need it. You don’t have to wait until Monday if you don’t want to.” She started to weep, and I explained that a fresh start doesn’t always look like an immediate change in our habits. Sometimes it starts with a change in our mind. That change happens for some gradually and others instantly. As I continued to share, I could see her self-confidence being restored. She let out a big sigh and stated, “I was putting way more pressure on myself than I needed to. It’s possible to make mistakes and not be a mistake.”
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m a Mental Health Therapist and self-published author of two amazing Christian books, the first is a 30-Day healing devotional: Chronicles of a Caring God – Healing for hurting hearts, and the second, 100 Dates with Jesus – 100 unconventional ways to strengthen your relationship with Jesus! I’ve been working and creating within the Mental Health realm for a little over four years now and I can truly say that I’m grateful to be doing what I love everyday. I work with clients who may be struggling with Anxiety, Depression, Grief, Self-esteem concerns, Enduring transition, and Personal growth and development. I’m most proud of my resiliency. Like most, I have endured some hardships in life that were crushing. I could have chosen to lose hope where I was, wallow in my sorrow, and give up on my dreams, but I chose to embrace adversity, develop resourcefulness, and push through. I would like potential clients/followers to know that healing and growth are not always linear. If we’re going to truly heal and become all that we are destined to be, we must remove our healing expectations and embrace self-compassion. Lastly, if I’m ever given the opportunity, It would be an honor to come alongside you during your healing journey.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been loving people well. No matter what business a person is in, relationships with people will always be important. It’s easy to get caught up in what isn’t happening and who isn’t supporting. I’ve learned to challenge these thoughts and embrace those who have been put in my path.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
I think that connecting with likeminded individuals is most helpful for succeeding in my field. There is something immensely powerful about being apart of a community that understands what you’re working to accomplish. Their support, insight, and honesty helps a good Therapist become a great Therapist.
